Today's @NobelPrize for John Hopfield recognizes only one of his contributions - he's a true polymath. I strongly recommend his solo author PNAS papers (i) long-range e- tunneling in proteins (1974), (ii) kinetic proof-reading (1974), (iii) Hopfield nets (1982). Each is a gem!

The phrase ‘metastasis accounts for 90% of cancer deaths’ is one of the most widely used in cancer research, yet it is overly simplistic & imprecise. Here we dig deeper into the events leading to cancer mortality nature.com/articles/s41568-0… 1/2

This is a blatant misrepresentation of our work science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…. Our study does not in any way suggest that the application of SPF50 sunscreen “blocks our natural defences” or is detrimental to health.
Vitamin D regulates cancer immunity via microbiome- another reason to stop using SPF 50 all year round which blocks our natural defences science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…
Community note
The linked study is a pre-clinical study based on mice alone. The suggestion that this means humans can reduce SPF use is not evidence-based, and should be read with caution. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The proof just arrived this evening at my door. I am pleasantly surprised at the quality. The print version will be available in a few days at the royalty-free price (Amazon). Still, feel free to download it in its entirety at masspec.scripps.edu/about/ma… or doi.org/10.63025/LCUW3037
Tens of thousands of papers/books on #masspec or #metabolomics, now a book with “Metabolomics" AND "Mass Spectrometry" You can freely download the book at masspec.scripps.edu/about/ma… and doi.org/10.63025/LCUW3037 A hardcopy will be available in the coming days. Thoughts welcome

UMAP dimensionality reduction was designed to help visualize relationships in high-dimensional data. But, most users don’t know how it works, and therefore can’t usefully interpret the graphs. This is a great UMAP description, with interactive sliders! pair-code.github.io/understa…
