This is it. After 40 years I am retiring today. I have had a fascinating career and the privilege to work with wonderful people round the world. Thank you to everyone - and above all to @SingenBingen The road goes ever on and on

The problem with Starmer’s social media ban is it’s like a policy announcement designed for social media: little thought given to implementation, no analysis of how to juggle different policy trade-offs.

What would you consider a "holy smell"? Maybe one triggering a memory of a particular place, or is the category wider? Here's my latest for @The_Tablet on odours of sanctity, and personally I don't mean incense. thetablet.co.uk/blogs/odours…

Performance related pay doesn't work. Nobody goes the extra mile for a small uplift - they do so because they want to do the best job they can. And it demotivates the many who don't quite cross the line. theguardian.com/politics/202…

Can you name everyone in your pew? Everyone has several people that they meet regularly and can't put a name to, but I'd like to do better in church specifically. Here's my latest for @The_Tablet on why it matters: thetablet.co.uk/blogs/never-…

Caricaturists and their editors must take care that their depictions of Jews in public life do not wade into centuries old anti-Jewish tropes. We have seen a number of examples of political cartoons published depicting Zack Polanski that are a cause for concern. We call on publications to show the utmost vigilance and stringency on these issues.

I have spent many hours as ambassador supporting Jewish communities. I received Rabbis Jonathan Sacks and Ephraim Mirvis at🇻🇦. I have knelt on pavements to clean stolpersteine in 🇮🇹, 🇨🇿, 🇸🇮, 🇭🇺 and 🇸🇰. I condemn what is happening in 🇬🇧. We must wake up! I stand with #BritishJews

Parallel NSCs is a recipe for confusion, at best. All you need to make the existing NSC work is ministers brave enough to ask for challenging advice and officials bright enough to produce it.

Views may differ on whether Olly Robbins should have somehow shared that issues had arisen in vetting. But his evidence shows that in a complex situation he took his responsibilities very seriously, did not act incompetently or with malign intent, and does not merit dismissal.

Could not agree more:
Today’s decision to brand Nobel Peace Prize laureate Memorial as extremist is yet another example of the systematic repression of civil society in Russia. The decision is a loss not only for human rights, including freedom of expression in Russia, but also for Russians’ access to their history and documentation of Soviet repression.

#Kragujevac remembers! It was an honour today to name a medical centre in Kragujevac after Dr Elizabeth Ross, who was director of the Scottish Women’s Hospital here during #WW1, and who died of typhus amongst her patients. Hvala na divnom sećanju na hrabru doktorku. 🇬🇧 🤝 🇷🇸

On this feast of the Annunciation, it is worth remembering that the Archangel Gabriel, “God’s Messenger”, is the patron saint of diplomats. At this difficult moment in world affairs, his inspiration is all the more important for those of us in this profession dedicated to peace.

My Cambridge lecture on the impact of Brexit has now been published and is available online. The major lesson I draw from it is that things that kind of work when you're saying them don't necessarily work in print cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Sad. The Guardian once considered it progressive not to be racist. Not anymore I guess. The Palestinian café is great and the idea it stands for is noble. But why inject nasty antisemitic tones into the story?
The Guardian: Even tho a bakery which had a Jewish founder is a British business (technically, we guess), it’s clearly an act of aggression for a Jew-store to open near a salt-of-the-earth independently owned Palestinian cafe. theguardian.com/commentisfre…
