The iconic Sagrada Família in Barcelona has been under construction for 144 years. The final and tallest spire has finally been completed.

A rare look at how an architectural idea survived on paper — and was echoed decades later in stone. Gaudí’s early vision for the narthex of the Sagrada Família’s Passion Façade shows the dramatic, almost skeletal structure he imagined for this side of the basilica. Built long after his death, the façade was later developed by other architects and artists, including sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs, whose angular figures gave it its intense modern expression.

Gaudí’s first house. Casa Vicens was built between 1883 and 1885 in Barcelona’s Gràcia neighborhood as a summer home for Manel Vicens i Montaner. It was Antoni Gaudí’s first major residential commission and already shows many elements that would define his later work: ceramic tiles, exposed brick, ironwork, natural motifs, and a strong connection between architecture and ornament. The façade combines green-and-white tiles, red brick, stone, and floral patterns inspired by the natural world. Casa Vicens opened as a house museum in 2017.

It was close, but Tropical Storm Cristina failed to become a rare landfalling cyclone in El Salvador, degenerating to a sheared post-tropical feature before reaching land.
