The daughter won this debate. Excellent rhetorical skills here. The pathos really came through.
Some tricky conversations this evening about the impending social media ban. ā€˜I don’t even know who this government guy is’ ā€˜Keir Starmer’ ā€˜Keir Starmer, what does that mean’

The biosecurity filters in claude/chatgpt are oversensitive, triggering on completely innocuous things. If you complain to them about it the support people will just give you instructions on how to get around it.

Well said. It’s quite clear to anyone who has used a pipette that these absurdly restrictive health science safeguards have been implemented by individuals from the computer science/cybersecurity industries who simply lack the context to apply these safeguards rationally.

HBD! Bassel Khartabil would be 45 today. Open‑hardware pioneer, Wikimedia contributor, and co‑founder of New Palmyra — with unreleased letters, drives and notes that could still reshape heritage preservation and open tech. Honor him: edit, share, build. basselkhartabil.org/2026/05/…

I entirely reject the framing of "real" food versus fake food. All food sold in a grocery store is real food. That said, it's pretty ironic that the way some interpret "real" food is whatever buzzword is printed on the package.
I believe you that you can't more cheaply get four packs of "A Dozen Cousins Classic Chicken Bone Broth Rice, 8 OZ", but what people who are trying to save money do is buy plain rice and then cook it in chicken broth, for ~$1.

I made "bone broth" accidentally one time by saving chicken drumstick bones and tossing them in the slow cooker. (Too gelatinous, never made it again!) "Organic" is another buzzword scam. You are paying extra for the valence of the words used- which is a very non-real thing!

This is a great use case for a phone and it's why my daughter got one for her 9th birthday. If she needs me she can call me, if I want to check up on her, I can call her. (Even better - location tracking!)
NGL if your parenting plan requires a 9 year old to always be within shouting distance, you might want to consider how the future adult is going to function in the world.

Fun fact: factory farmed chickens have the lowest environmental footprint, grass-fed beef the highest. leap.ox.ac.uk/environmental-… However in terms of welfare, grass-fed beef has the highest and factor farmed chickens probably the lowest. They're in direct conflict! Enjoy!

British children are more likely to walk or cycle to school today than American kids were in the 1960s.

About 170,000 UK children are exposed to clinically significant levels of lead. Only about 250 of them will receive any intervention to reduce that exposure. Six MPs and a Lord have signed an open letter suggesting we change that: ft.com/content/ee6039ff-de01…

If you want to keep your children safe online, teach them about cybersecurity, which has many aspects. One of them is the importance of using a VPN, which every teen should do. It's a human rights issue and also a practical thing to do. 1/

PSA because I've been seeing this a lot in Twitter profiles, but this is a *Russian* Orthodox cross:ā˜¦ļø Calling it the Orthodox cross is Greek Orthodox cross erasure.😠

Let’s not make this into a gender war, we all know that every single person who loves working on computers also constantly wants to violently murder them
why do women hate everything that man loves

The IFS obsession always seemed weird to me. It seemed obvious to me it would invite Dissociative Identity Disorder, and I just googled it and found out it DID. thecut.com/article/truth-abo…
TPOT as a culture is starting to crumble. The autistic anxious animal alts are now employed. The people telling you "do IFS" are on year 2 of having regulated their inner gifted child. The tweets yearning for a bf/gf are nowhere to be found. The "me and who" crowd is on...

*sigh* diamm.ac.uk/ confidently incorrectly declaring downloading scans of medieval manuscripts is "theft" despite the fact that they're public domain in the UK - as clarified in a 2023 supreme court decision. theartnewspaper.com/2023/12/…
