Earlier this weekend @pete_ar_fryn asked me for my thoughts on this. For the inevitable point where I get pigeon-holed into either being a loony liberal (true) or gilet-wearing rural traditionalist (also true) - my background is about 20yrs of working in the British countryside, either in the 'outdoor' sector or in practical conservation and land management. I can assure you that I sit firmly in both camps - because they should not be in opposition to each other. 1/God knows how many
ACCESS TO THE LAND Look at this OS map. Paths everywhere. Looks like you can walk freely across this part of rural Wales. But the reality is very different from the map. #RightToRoam 1/10

Busy week, so just about got this weeks #positiveforestry posted in timešŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø Is worth it though because this one shows that sometimes forestry doesn't have to be labeled as one thing or the other and neither do the people working in it. And the benefits are sometimes not obvious

Successive govts. have been far too reliant on ā€œopportunity / constraintā€ mapping, presumably driven by remote data and algorithms - to the point where stuff can’t happen even though it’s clearly the right thing if you just looked on the ground or listened to the people who do
So this week in the world of farm/environment/land management/ mapping has been ā€œinterestingā€ And by ā€œinterestingā€ I mean ā€œverging on the utterly bonkersā€ Why? Well this week started with Natural England, the government body that looks after the environment launching a new map.

England’s most detailed peat map is here! 🌱 Peatlands store carbon, clean water, and protect against flooding. This new map helps us better protect them. naturalengland.blog.gov.uk/2… Watch the video to learn more.

We've been to @cairngormsnews, exploring for ourselves what people living there think about the Natural Environment (Scotland) Bill. Our fresh perspectives will feed into the recommendations we make to @ScotParl later in the year. Convener @fincarson tells you morešŸ‘‡

And I'm no cheerleader for the latter, but their track record on supporting community empowerment is *far* better than most public bodies. Indeed, it was their National Forest Land Scheme that arguably forced @scotgov to extend that approach to the rest of the public sector.

With respect, @Torcuil, you're confusing 2 different organisations: @scotforestry is responsible for policy & grants, @ForestryLS is responsible for managing the National Forest Estate.
There needs to be a serious look at the role of Forestry and Land Scotland, not just the policy on forestry grants for millionaires but also the use of public land for commercially-owned renewable projects which should be leased to communities. theferret.scot/politicians-b…
