🚨PSA FOR #APSDFD ABSTRACTS🚨 did you know work on education, outreach, and diversity now has a permanent abstract sorting category??? now you do!!! You can submit 2 abstracts if 1 is ed-related so go to town! I know there are some cool projects out there 👀🌊🍃🌪️

It was epic! @UW shut down causing my PhD qualifying exam to be postponed. A couple years later, right before my general (candidacy) exam, the pandemic hit... The running joke became that we had to prepare for the big one to hit Seattle or the apocalypse for my defense.
4 years ago around 8 am it starting snowing in Seattle. By the end of the day 6.4" of snow fell. It snowed the 9th (1.5"), 10th (3.5") & 11th (6.1") before the snow turned to rain on the 11th. The 17.5" between the 8th & 11th was the highest 4 day snow total since 1969. #wawx

Though, fortunately, my final exam was one of the first to be held and celebrated in person and not foiled by any major natural/supernatural disasters!!

When i talk about my PhD research on cross-flow turbines in marine applications (instead of wind) I always get asked, "what about the fish?" These are great videos showing that fish are smart and agile enough to avoid the large spinning object! 🐟🐠🐡

Just submitted: Hydrokinetic turbines do not impact fish swimming behaviour as fish tend to avoid the device and successfully moved upstream and downstream without interference. @Stephie_Mueller @EngineeringCU @UoM_MACE Here we have a fish enjoying to swim in the turbine wake!

Our paper from 2020 shows that cross-flow turbines can beneficially interact and produce more power together in arrays than they would in isolation. These interactions could significantly increase power production if implemented on a large scale! Check it out to learn more!

What does a Gaussian process "look like"?🧐 My take on interactive visualisation of #GaussianProcesses aims to help you intuitively understand prior and posterior kernel functions: infinitecuriosity.org/vizgp/ - would love to hear your suggestions for improvements! Made in #svelte

Check out Steve's new video on RPCA with some of our work featured! paper: journals.aps.org/prfluids/ab… RPCA/fluids video: youtu.be/grdAW4oUUXk
New video! Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) youtu.be/yDpz0PqULXQ PCA is a backbone of statistics & machine learning but is fragile to outliers & missing data. RPCA addresses this issue & is used in many fields including the Netflix prize, image science, & fluids.

We found that arrays with well considered geometries and control strategies can outperform isolated turbines by up to 30%. An exciting prospect for future array deployments!

@IsabelScherl will present this work at #apsdfd2020 this week. Very nice approach to decompose corrupt fluid flow data into coherent structures sparse outliers. Editors' Suggestion in @PhysRevFluids journals.aps.org/prfluids/pd…
