I understand there isn’t much interest in public diplomacy at present in the US, but on balance Mexico has run circles around us on this score this World Cup. Canada is a non-factor because everybody knows it’s Canada.

While World Cup teams arriving in the U.S. have faced controversial searches, hourslong detentions and visa restrictions … Mexico is being praised for its hospitality and warm atmosphere.

Applebaum’s “liberal language:”
Applebaum: What binds Russia, China, Iran and North Korea is not religion or ideology. China is communist, Russia nationalist, Iran theocratic. What binds them is fear of liberal language: rights, rule of law, separation of powers and independent courts. 1/

USMNT thoughts: 1) starting Tim Ream a huge mistake. He shouldn’t have been named to the squad, much less starting. 2) pushing Sergiño up is smart. He can still track back but his contribution was always offensive. 3) if Balogun doesn’t have a goal at ‘60 Pepi should be on.

If only the Free Press opposed ethnic grievance politics consistently
John McWhorter: American politicians who build their brand around black grievances are “becoming a relic of another time…. I almost feel sorry for them.” “We need more cosmopolitan, and frankly more honest, people as black leaders.”

FDD in fact did its best to defend the Saudi government after they murdered Jamal Khashoggi for his ideas.
I'm actually quite proud to work at FDD and not at a place where people engage in the worst kind of social media gotcha-ism to crucify someone for the worst possible interpretation of something they said, something they never intended. FDD is a think tank. We engage with ideas. We don't call for murdering people for their ideas. That's what Iran did by putting FDD on its hit list. No, we advocate policies and call out terrible ideas, like when Beinart advocates for Jews to relinquish self-determination in the world's only Jewish state. Anyone who knows the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and follows Palestinian current events (or other sectarian conflicts) would know that that is a recipe for a bloodbath. Khamenei, Sinwar, and Nasrallah all engaged in military efforts to destroy Israel and were themselves dealt with militarily. Beinart engages in intellectual efforts to destroy Israel and should be dealt with intellectually. Perhaps stepping out of social media's toxicity would be helpful for those putting words into Mark's mouth and attacking him for their imagination.

The bros are gonna bro. Doesn’t matter where.
Los aficionados de Corea del Sur no podían entrar con el tequila rumbo al estadio, así que se la empezaron a tomar entre todos y después invitaron a los mexicanos a beber también JAJAJAJAJA. Es el mejor Mundial de la historia.

Bordeaux has become so unfashionable that there are screaming values across the $30-60 per bottle range. Compared to Cab/Merlot/Franc at similar prices from California, the wines are often more balanced and higher quality.

Much of the Iran hawks' preferred policy has a "True communism has never been tried" vibe to it. Mark my words, in a year we'll be hearing about how a few weeks more pressure would have brought Iran to heel.
POTUS is about to realize that the people who cheered him on loudest in starting this war will assail him, his team, the mediators and everyone else for getting a deal, whatever its terms, to end it. Because that's much easier than admitting that their schemes have been folly.

Bring the Iranian team to the US and let's do the same thing.
World Cup teams have mandated “community sessions” that are mainly exclusive ticketed events. Algeria’s community session was a real one, where the community was invited and now, children in the KC metro get to say they’ve played with international soccer stars.

The fact that foreign defense ministers are measuring what their nations need to spend in terms of a percent of GDP shows that American intellectual pathologies are still contagious.
