Not every risk is visible on the surface. Whether it’s a river, bathing water or another environmentally sensitive location, a routine drainage activity can have wider implications depending on where that asset sits within the network and what it connects to downstream. Providing operatives with the right information at the point of delivery helps protect the environment, reduce avoidable mistakes and ensure decisions on site reflect the wider network, not just the asset in view. #Drainage #FloodRisk #EnvironmentalProtection #AssetManagement #LocalGovernment #Resilience #KaarbonTech

The Environment Agency’s new SWIM guidance is an important shift for surface water flood risk management. One of the biggest challenges with SuDS has always been demonstrating the cumulative value of multiple smaller interventions and building a strong enough case to access funding. SWIM begins to address that by allowing packages of SuDS measures to be appraised together as a single intervention. For LLFAs and highways authorities, this increases the importance of network visibility, evidence and understanding how interventions contribute to wider resilience outcomes. We’ve pulled together a short practical overview of what the update means in practice for authorities: kaarbontech.co.uk/articles/w… gov.uk/government/publicatio… #SuDS #FloodResilience #ClimateAdaptation #SurfaceWater #Drainage #KaarbonTech

Forecasts alone don’t explain how a drainage network will behave under pressure. Understanding where weather may place stress on assets, routes and communities requires forecasts to sit alongside operational network data, not separately from it. In our latest short read, we look at how live weather overlays are helping teams bring forecast information directly into the operational picture to support preparedness, prioritisation and a more resilient network. 🔗kaarbontech.co.uk/articles/c… #FloodResilience #Drainage #ClimateAdaptation #AssetManagement #SuDS #KaarbonTech

As we head into May, many councils are once again supporting initiatives like #NoMowMay, pausing grass cutting in selected areas to support biodiversity and local habitats. At the same time, teams are balancing this with very real operational needs, from maintaining visibility on the highway network to managing public expectations around how spaces are maintained. This isn’t a simple “cut vs don’t cut” decision. It highlights a wider challenge across green infrastructure: how do you manage different outcomes, safety, biodiversity, cost and public perception in a way that is clear, consistent and evidence-led? This is where better visibility of the network becomes critical. Understanding where cutting is needed, where it isn’t, and why, allows authorities to move away from reactive decisions and towards a more structured, informed approach. We’ve explored this in more detail here: kaarbontech.co.uk/articles/t… #GreenInfrastructure #LocalGovernment #AssetManagement #ClimateAdaptation #KaarbonTech

Flood risk isn’t just about understanding where problems might occur; it’s about deciding what to do next and being able to justify it. Our risk modelling helps authorities prioritise action, target investment, and support funding bids with clear evidence, moving from reactive response to planned intervention. kaarbontech.co.uk/articles/a… #FloodResilience #RiskModelling #ClimateAdaptation #SuDS #DataInsight #KaarbonTech

We’re pleased to be continuing our work with @northyorksc for the next 4 years, supporting their drainage and flood resilience approach. This renewal also marks the second consecutive year that the full gully maintenance programme has been delivered to 100%, something that hadn’t been achieved prior to this shift in approach. It reflects the move away from a purely cyclical model towards a more structured, risk-informed programme, with improved visibility, planning and delivery, helping to build a more resilient network and support long-term flood resilience across the area. #LocalGovernment #AssetManagement #Drainage #FloodResilience #KaarbonTech

Continuing from understanding what’s been built, the next challenge is keeping that information connected over time. What was approved, what was built, what’s happened since - and who’s responsible at each stage? Our SuDS lifecycle tracking helps maintain a connected record of each asset, from planning through to long-term management. We’re pleased to be continuing our work with Middlesbrough Council, with the implementation of Tree SMART to support the management of tree risk across the authority. This extends the partnership to support both drainage operations and tree risk management, helping create a more complete view of infrastructure, risk and performance across the authority. This forms part of our ongoing role as their Resilience Partner, supporting better understanding, planning and long-term management of the network. #LocalGovernment #AssetManagement #FloodResilience #KaarbonTech

Knowing something’s built is one thing. Knowing what’s been tested, evidenced, and still at risk is another. As part of our wider Flood Resilience development, we’re focusing on how SuDS are understood beyond design; bringing structure and visibility to what’s actually been delivered on site. This includes auditing; capturing what’s been built, recording testing, and maintaining a clear, evidence-based history over time. Flooding isn’t just a dot on a map. A single point might show where flooding was recorded, but it doesn’t show the extent of the event, which assets were affected, or how it impacted the wider network. Our latest Flood Resilience insight explores how moving from points to mapped flood extents creates a clearer understanding of risk, impact, and where intervention is actually needed. When people see potholes, the focus is usually on the surface, but the surface is only the outcome. Standing water, drainage performance and how water behaves on the network play a much bigger role in how and where deterioration occurs. This short video looks at that relationship, and why understanding where water is actually sitting on the network can support more informed preventative decisions. Flood events are understood through the evidence we piece together afterwards; but that evidence is often spread across systems, teams and responsibilities. From asset data and highways drainage through to Section 19 investigations, each part tells a piece of the story, but rarely in one place. Our latest insight into our Flood Resilience development explores how bringing these elements together into a single view moves away from silos and creates a clearer understanding of what actually happened, and what needs to happen next. Changing climate, constrained budgets and ageing infrastructure are putting increasing pressure on local authorities. Traditional approaches; treating every asset the same, relying on reactive response, or working in siloes, no longer reflect how networks actually behave. Last week at the APSE - Association for Public Service Excellence Highways Seminar, Graeme Forward spoke about the shift we’re seeing across the sector; from activity-led operations to intelligence-led resilience. This is where our role as the Resilience Partner comes into focus, connecting data, operations and insight to support more prepared, more resilient service delivery. Over recent months, we’ve been working behind the scenes with highway and LLFA teams across the country to beta test our new Floods & SuDS development. Built in collaboration with authorities already using our drainage and flood management tools, it connects SuDS assets, flood mapping and community reporting; responding to a changing climate and helping break down siloes between teams and data. The result is a clearer, more connected view of the network, enabling even more proactive, risk-based management. We’re continuing to refine it through real-world feedback. If your authority would like to be part of this process, now’s the time to get in touch! #SuDS #FloodResilience #Innovation #DataInsight #LocalGovernment #FloodManagement #KaarbonTech

Flood data can tell us where water might be - but not how a community will be affected. Our new public reporting tools are designed to bridge that gap: connecting on-the-ground insight with live drainage and flood data to show the impact of every event. In Wigan, this approach is already making a difference. Working closely with highways and LLFA teams, we’ve helped build a system that turns verified community reports into actionable intelligence; linking them directly to assets, investigations, and live mapping. Shortlist for a DfT Special Recognition Award; this innovation improves how local authorities prioritise, evidence, and communicate during flooding. #CommunityImpact #FloodResilience #SuDS #Innovation #DataInsight #DrainageManagement #LocalGovernment #WiganCouncil #DfTAwards #KaarbonTech
