60,000 at @UJAFederation’s Walk For Israel in Toronto today. Love, love, love seeing these good people standing up for the only democracy in the Middle East, which is under siege from obscurantist forces. Nothing can replace Jewish pride. No challenge is too big for Jews with the heads held high. 💪🇮🇱✡️

This is an excellent point. It's only been 6 weeks since the Senate of Canada released a detailed report with concrete recommendations on this exact topic. It's bizarre the Prime Minister wouldn't even mention it. It's here, btw. sencanada.ca/content/sen/com…

It was underwhelming. There are studies, there are recommendations. Most recently from the Senate. Cut the speeches and just implement them. As for the choice of doing the speech in a synagogue, I think it was meant to show solidarity, But...

Carney has unveiled a new council to combat antisemitism in Canada. The lineup includes a former Liberal minister who is a Muslim, a DEI executive who is also Muslim, a progressive lawyer interested in social justice issues who represented pro-Palestinian encampment activists, an LGBT activist, and an Olympic speed skater. Only one member is Jewish: Senator Marc Gold, has a long public record in Jewish communal and pro-Israel advocacy. Seems like expertise in antisemitism was considered optional. If the goal was to reassure Jewish Canadians, this is a bizarre way to go about it. pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releas…

Canadian Jews do not need asylum in the USA. We need the government of Canada to step up. We are Canadian.

The campaign harassing Jewish schools & day camps through spurious CRA investigations is an attack on the viability of Jewish life in Canada. The fact this hate campaign is being amplified by former diplomats is beyond odious. Am embarrassed to have worked with these people.

You forgot the National Religious. They and their hesder yeshiva student-soldiers serve at a very high rate and have been injured or killed in large numbers. They are beyond angry at haredi draft dodgers.

Also, pretty rich to say that the National Religious parties are aligned with the anti-draft Haredi parties when so is Likud, which is the party of the traditional non-religious, ie @sfrantzman's "middle Israel". Per Haaretz, RZ & OY are actually more aligned with Hardal than DL

Goodness gracious. It is used in a pejorative way by those who see it as an outmoded institution, a nostalgic, sentimental attachment to a particular family. She wisely points to its virtues here, which have to do not with a family, but a long track record of stability for Canada.
There is nothing pejorative about the term “monarchist.” It simply means someone who supports our constitutional monarchy, ie the bedrock of our entire constitutional order.

We need to bring back the beacons.
1/9 On May 14, 1948, Ben-Gurion declared Israel independent. That part everyone knows. What nobody remembers is that the holiday commemorating that moment — Yom Ha'atzmaut — was Israel's second attempt at a national holiday. And almost nothing about it was planned. 🧵

Findings and Conclusions of the Inquiry into the Conduct of an IDF Soldier Who Damaged a Christian Symbol in Southern Lebanon The inquiry found that during IDF activity in the area of the Christian village of Debel in southern Lebanon, an IDF soldier damaged a Christian religious symbol while another soldier photographed the act. Six additional soldiers were present at the scene and did not act to stop the incident or report it. The inquiry determined that the soldiers’ conduct completely deviated from IDF orders and values. The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident and emphasizes that its operations in Lebanon are directed solely against the Hezbollah terrorist organization and other terrorist groups, and not against Lebanese civilians. From the moment the report of the incident was received, the IDF has been working to assist the local community in replacing the statue. Accordingly, it was decided that the soldier who damaged the Christian symbol and the soldier who photographed the act will be removed from combat duty and will receive 30 days of military detention. The remaining troops who stood by have been summoned for clarification discussions that will be held later on, after which further command-level measures will be determined. Procedures regarding conduct with religious institutions and symbols were reinforced to the troops prior to their entry into the relevant areas, and will be reinforced again for all troops in the area following the incident. The findings of the inquiry were presented to the Chief of the General Staff and the Commander of the Northern Command. The Chief of the General Staff condemned the incident and stated that it constitutes unacceptable conduct and a moral failure, far exceeding any acceptable standard and contradicting IDF values and the expected conduct of its troops.
Following the completion of an initial examination regarding a photograph published earlier today of an IDF soldier harming a Christian symbol, it was determined that the photograph depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon. The IDF views the incident with great severity and emphasizes that the soldier’s conduct is wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops. The incident is being investigated by the Northern Command and is currently being addressed through the chain of command. Appropriate measures will be taken against those involved in accordance with the findings. Furthermore, the IDF is working to assist the community in restoring the statue to its place. The IDF is operating to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure established by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, and has no intention of harming civilian infrastructure, including religious buildings or religious symbols.

Beirut is a red line. In the midst of the ongoing war, the state cannot remain passive while Beirut is turned into a platform for illegal weapons. From our position in Parliament, we call on the Council of Ministers to take an immediate decision to declare Beirut a weapons-free city, and to task the Lebanese Army with full deployment across all its areas, extending to Dahieh, in every street and corner, under a clear plan that includes fixed checkpoints, security points, and full authority to control and confiscate illegal arms. Today, after Dahieh has been emptied, the opportunity is clear: why has the army not deployed in every corner? And why is there no decisive decision to dismantle Hezbollah’s military arsenal in Dahieh? Is it not better for the Lebanese Army to carry out this mission—protecting Dahieh and its people—instead of Israel destroying it along with its homes and neighborhoods? The responsibility lies with the Council of Ministers. Protecting Beirut is a duty, not a choice.

A bunch of people reached out asking if they can match Lindsay and my gifts to Chabad on Campus this weekend. Of course. The more the better 💙 All weekend people have been sharing stories with me about the Chabad on their campus. When a parent died. When they felt alone. When they were struggling to find community. Or when they simply needed a place for Shabbat dinner. Same story every time. The rabbi and rebbetzin showed up with kindness and open arms. If you want to help support Jewish students across Canada, DM me and we’ll direct it to some of the incredible campus centers we’re supporting, including @chabadwestern, @JewishWaterloo, @chabadguelph, @McGillChabad, @ChabadConcordia, @ChabadQueens, @ChabadUBC, @ChabadCalgary, @ChabadDal, and @ChabadUofA.
This weekend Lindsay and I will make donations to campus Chabad houses across Canada. They open their homes to students. They feed them. Support them. Show up for them. Often quietly. Always with love. To the entire @Chabad on Campus community: thank you for everything you do for Jewish students everywhere. Shabbat shalom 💙

Please read the following statement from ambassador @MoedIddo: “I am shocked and outraged by the shooting attacks that targeted Bayt Synagogue in Thornhill and Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue in North York, Toronto, last night. These cowardly assaults on houses of worship are abhorrent acts of violence that strike at the heart of our shared values—safety, dignity, and freedom of religion. This incident is not only a further escalation in a sequence of similar events in the last years in Toronto, but also is part of a troubling global pattern of antisemitic violence and intimidation. It follows the tragic shooting near Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, which also targeted Jewish community members at prayer. These growing threats must be met with vigilance and determination. I call on the Government of Canada, provincial authorities, and law enforcement agencies to act decisively to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the full protection of Jewish institutions across the country. The safety of Canada’s Jewish community must remain a national priority and a collective responsibility.”

I'm incredibly impressed by Amb. @Scanlon_Leslie. For the first time in a while, Canada has an ambassador in Israel who is devoted to the relationship between the two countries
