Publishing costs have quadrupled since 1986. Publishers make insane profits on scholarly work paid with tax-payer subsidies. Huge drain on higher ed funding.
We all know it, yet somehow our careers still depend on publishing in these "top" journals.

So turns out that, by telling boycotting staff they're losing 100% of pay & getting 50% back ex gratia (to avoid having to justify 50% as a value being directly deducted), Durham and any other uni using that argument might end up paying that 50% tax free! community.hmrc.gov.uk/custom…
