Monetary wise, spending 350m this summer in total and 200m on the midfield is not excessive.
The issue MUFC has, is that it has carried a debt to the squad from way before Fergie left, every single season. We need 6 players, and sign 3-4. Year in, year out.
Brighton's biggest spending during one summer window is bigger than United's biggest spending during a summer window, ever.
This is Glazerism at its worst. The cost for filling a hole on the squad 'one year in advance' is marginal. You are making the investment anyway. You improve the season you make it. But you of course pay for it 1 year earlier.
It is probably not optimal to sign 3 midfielders one summer. Being successful on the transfer market is all about opportunities. If we look at the most successful signings, they could rarely have been done is substituted with an equally successful signing 12 months earlier or 12 months later. There is a limited number of opportunities on the transfer market. Signing Julian Alvarez was one of City's best signings. If they waited 12 months, they could never have made an equally good signing.
But the big issue is that we always keep pushing problems forward. In an ideal world, you look to sign 2-3 players each summer. 20 player squad, 5 year contracts, 4 contracts are up each summer, you resign 1-2 and replace 2-3, very roughly of course.
🚨 It is unlikely Man Utd will go for BOTH Mateus Fernandes and Alex Scott at their current £80m valuations, with Ederson also coming in for nearly €40m.
If the price drops for these players, which is possible,
#mufc could go for two players with proven Premier League experience. [
