Too many kids don’t spend enough time at the connected text level. Let’s change that.
💡 Alex Osburn reminds us: “All roads should lead to connected text.” 🎧 Hear more from Melissa Orkin & Alex Osburn in our latest episode, Why Morphology Matters for Word Reading and More. ow.ly/9rCM50XhrCT

Just a reminder...it is not just teachers who need to be trained in the science of reading. Educational leaders and ed board members need or should, at a minimum, have a working understanding of what evidence-based reading instructional practices are. Why? Because balanced literacy is entrenched in the American educational system, and all habits die hard. Plus, teaching is already a hard and exhausting enough job, and when you add to that the act of "constantly swimming against the stream", it often leads to teacher burnout and misunderstandings. Yes, teachers can be agents of change in their districts, but the change that happens when individual teachers start to speak up tends to move slowly through the system, and while it happens, many children are left behind, and that is too high of price to pay for our vulnerable learners.

I was just having a conversation about this with a colleague! I’m so tired of seeing this as a recommendation, especially for MLs, and most especially for our vulnerable MLs who are SIFE(students with interrupted formal education) who are learning to read for the first time!
This is another legacy from BL, and it is particularly true for novice readers.

Yes, yes and yes! ✨🌟✨
The body of evidence we call the science of reading applies to ENL/MLL/ESL/ELL and bilingual students. Also, we need more experts speaking up and removing the myths about this population and SOR.
