Just a reminder...it is not just teachers who need to be trained in the science of reading. Educational leaders and ed board members need or should, at a minimum, have a working understanding of what evidence-based reading instructional practices are.
Why?
Because balanced literacy is entrenched in the American educational system, and all habits die hard.
Plus, teaching is already a hard and exhausting enough job, and when you add to that the act of "constantly swimming against the stream", it often leads to teacher burnout and misunderstandings.
Yes, teachers can be agents of change in their districts, but the change that happens when individual teachers start to speak up tends to move slowly through the system, and while it happens, many children are left behind, and that is too high of price to pay for our vulnerable learners.
