Another one of our favourite river restoration schemes was the River Bulbourne at Boxmoor in Hertfordshire, this one won several awards and completely transformed this previously straight 12m wide channel into to a diverse habitat.
Check out our new story map on Chiltern chalk streams, compiled by one of our volunteers, Susan Holmes. The story map gives a tour of the chalk streams found across the Chiltern Society’s area, including their ecological status & our nearby sites: bit.ly/3CV4C4q
The #RiverBulbourne greatest threat is over abstraction to keep the Grand Union Canal flowing.
Local volunteers & school groups work hard increasing a sense of place by daylighting sections & planting. A collaborative approach to river management could do wonders here!
#WWWeek
Surprisingly the Bulbourne is bearing up quite well in Central Berkhamsted, probably because the leaky lock gates 48 are repaired, reducing the need for abstraction for canal replenishment. It's dried out here in previous summers. Much drier upstream though. #chalkstreams
This week, @WUFoundation, @theriverstrust and fourteen Herefordshire landowners have submitted an ambitious bid to Defra’s Landscape Recovery Scheme (part of ELMS) to help resolve the water pollution crisis afflicting the River Wye 🌊🐟🌿

This set of staves is from a tower pier of St Peter's Berkhamsted which is close to a minor royal castle and 800 years old. Can anyone suggest who might be able to tell us more? There are different styles of notes but I don't know their meaning. @MedievalG
Berkhampstead Loop, walk along the banks of the River Bulbourne, a chalk stream.
River does not meet 'Good' ecological status.
Primary reason for failing to reach 'Good' status? Over abstraction for public water supply by @AffinityWater
And on and on.
River #Bulbourne still dry at Billet Lane #berkhamsted although it is running at Northchurch upstream - could it be caused by over-abstraction for GUC canal use at pump at Lock 49? @CanalRiverTrust please investigate #chalkstreams
My worst fears, no time frame & the criteria are too vague & difficult to quantify. I hope our MPs vote with their conscience & reject the Governments amendment to the Environment Bill and support the Lords amendment and follow @SarahGreenLD lead. @CharlesWalkerMP @gaganmohindra
This is @gaganmohindra MP for South West Herts. On Monday he gets to vote on a House of Lords ammendment that will reduce the amount of sewage pumped into our rivers and seas. I implore you to do the right thing this time. #EndSewagePollution@Feargal_Sharkey#Berkhamsted
The #Bulbourne was dry at all 3 borehole dips today - at Dudswell, Northchurch, Billet Lane. It's been dry at these places for over 2 months despite the rain. Over-abstraction? #chalkstreams
In Chesham and Amersham @SarahGreenLD we are aware that local issues can change constituency elections results. Suggest MPs who have rivers and coast line in their constituency consider this when they vote on the Environment Bill amendments today. @CharlesWalkerMP @gaganmohindra
