Maxwellâs work on electromagnetic wave propagation became one of the great milestones in natural philosophy.
In his 1865 paper, âA Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field,â James Clerk Maxwell showed that electricity, magnetism, and light were not separate phenomena, but different expressions of the same electromagnetic field.
Freeman Dyson called the publication of Maxwellâs paper the âmost important event of the nineteenth century in the history of the physical sciences.â
Feynman went even further, saying that, âFrom the long view of this history of mankind â seen from, say, 10,000 years from now â there can be little doubt that the most significant event of the 19th century will be judged as Maxwell's discovery of the laws of electromagnetism.â
Maxwell did not just explain light.
He unified nature in a way that later helped open the road to Einsteinâs theory of relativity.
