What is a name except what you are called. Has anyone considered this idea before
highly recommend the norton annotated critical editions of Moby-Dick, where one of the very first footnotes will be a thorough explanation of why ishmael isn't his name.

Yeah they invented surplus value in 1867. Been that way ever since

RT @ratlimit: I don’t understand “hangry”. Why should hunger sour your mood? Are you not grateful to be ailed at long last by something wit…

Nobody remembers this series, but Juushin Enbu ends with the hero basically dying because he's so outmatched until the writers remember he's supposed to win and, inexplicably and suddenly, he does. Even the protagonist basically says, "oh yeah I should try to win"

Yup. My pedagogy has been AI-proof for years 💪
It’s amazing how everyone is lamenting the way AI makes it impossible to assign take-home essays anymore when you can just give students in-class exams with true/false questions.

WAKE UP FREAKS A SPLENDID FAIRYWREN GOT CAUGHT OUT IN A RAIN SHOWER
A Splendid fairywren got caught out in a rain shower. Found across Australia, male splendid fairywrens are known for their bright electric-blue breeding feathers, while females remain mostly brown. Despite their tiny size, they are fast, highly active birds that spend much of the day searching for insects. Photo credit: Vikrant Deshpande

Suppose you wake up delirious from a fever dream. You're told that voting is now concluded, but you can't remember voting and have no idea which way you voted. They're about to announce the results. Which side do you hope won?
Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

I love these threads because the premise (the surveillance state has grown too extreme; people are punished for giving their children freedom) sounds good. Then people in the replies happily describe their own parenting behaviors which justify government intervention
It is literally illegal for Millennials to raise children the way Boomers and Xers raised children. Millennials are not the ones who made it illegal as they were children at the time.

Yooooo @NYCMayor, can you implement a rule that if NYPD is at a train station they have be visible from the turnstile? Their job is to prevent crime. If they’re visible, people won’t hop, and the crime is prevented. Hiding and trying to catch people hopping is fucked up.
