Just like land, the ocean has seasons. Thanks to hundreds of robotic ocean-monitoring floats equipped with oxygen sensors that collect data about ocean health and transmit it back to shore, we are able to measure the ocean's breath.

A new study from @MBARI_News researchers and their collaborators using SOCCOM float data has revealed that storms trigger the release of carbon dioxide from the ocean. This work will help improve models used for forecasting our changing climate.

3. Like plants on land, phytoplankton need nutrients to thrive, such as nitrate (NO₃). Growth can be calculated from their nitrate consumption. A fleet of robotic @BGC_Argo floats from @IMOS_AUS @SOCCOMproject continuously measures nitrate concentrations.

On the last night of the @RVAtlantis transit to Alaska, @melissatruth deployed 10 drifters from @Scripps_Ocean's Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory. The drifters measure sea surface temp & barometric pressure to support better weather forecasts.
