I’m very excited to share that my PhD work is now published @eLife! We used a combination of genetics, cell biology and biochemistry to identify a new endosomal complex in yeast, which we named VINE 🌿 Early access here: elifesciences.org/articles/7…. (1/n).

Interesting paper, awesome name for a shortened BAR domain!
MiniBAR has a unique truncated BAR domain, is a dual Rac / Rab #GTPases effector and controls both actin cytoskeleton and membrane trafficking in ciliogenesis. #RabGTPases #RhoGTPases #actin #myosin #membranetraffic #ciliopathies #zebrafish #cilia

Yeast friends—this is an interesting approach to getting around stubborn, tag-intolerant proteins for imaging studies
"Here, we successfully use LIVE-PAINT to image yeast membrane proteins that do not tolerate the direct fusion of a fluorescent protein by using peptide tags as short as 5-residues" biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Finally the community has a reliable, specific and high affinity probe to detect PI(3,5)P2 ! I am very excited about the new insights that this new tool will deliver about how this rare phospholipid controls diverse cellular events. Been great working on this with @jasonkinglab

I’m excited to share that after five amazing years with @conibear_liz and @UBC @CMMT_UBC, I have defended my doctoral dissertation and finished my PhD in Medical Genetics. We made some exciting discoveries over the years, and published papers that I’m truly proud of. 1/n.

Most of all, I want to thank @conibear_liz for being such an inspiring mentor and fiercely creative scientific role model. It was a privilege to work in the Conibear lab, and it wouldn’t be possible to synthesize all of the things I learned from Liz into a single tweet. (3/n).

For my next steps, I’ll be joining @pcstirling and @HieterLab to leverage synthetic lethality in DNA repair pathways for the treatment of various cancers. Stay tuned for more! 4/4.

A good perspective on the new changes @elife from a senior editor:
as a long time seniorĀ editor for @eLife I (MJF) thought I'd weigh in. When I first heard about the plan in its initial conception, I had my reservations for many of the same reasons some of you articulating. I've changed my mind. I think it is worth a shot

We have all (rightfully) complained about how flawed the current science publishing system is. The @eLife team is now challenging this status quo by abandoning the traditional ā€œaccepted manuscriptā€ title to instead publish everything that gets reviewed, along with an assessment.
Today, we’re introducing a new model that eliminates accept/reject decisions. By publishing every paper with eLife reviews as a Reviewed Preprint, we plan to restore autonomy to authors, ensuring that they will be judged by what, not where, they publish. elifesciences.org/inside-eli…

Manuscript accepted!! šŸ•ŗšŸ¼šŸ¾ This was a large, multi-lab project and I’m happy to have contributed to its success. Stay tuned for yeast membrane contact sites, lipid biology and a first glimpse at the (very) complicated inner workings of a potential new lipid transport protein—Lec1
