The scene in The Young Pope where The Patriarch of Moscow came in wearing the wrong head covering. Saw it in trailer and was so annoyed refused to watch show; if you can’t be bothered to do such basic research with your budget …
I read a story in which the author, whose hero was Texas, mentioned someone taking a "slice" of Frito pie, and thus exposed himself as a poseur. In a different story, by a different author, the hero went to Waffle House and bought a Belgian waffle - making it clear he had never in fact visited a Waffle House. In the Walking Dead, they go from Florida to South Carolina and can't find a single firearm in any house. "Huh" I thought. "The screenwriters are from Los Angeles." What examples can you give of a writer unintentionally giving away his lack of knowledge?

"You want more school days? Guess we'll have to get rid of Christmas" is the most blatant case of Washington Monument syndrome I've ever seen.
Parents have been pressuring Fairfax County Public Schools to make changes to the school calendar in order to get more instructional time for students. Now, the district is asking parents what days off should be eliminated, and that could include major religious holidays such as Christmas or Rosh Hashanah. bit.ly/4uy3N94

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

DMG Tip of the Week: THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL HACK You’re on the road, sitting in a hotel room, and it’s time for an interview or high-level meeting. The problem? When you use the desk, the bed is often prominently displayed behind you. And for obvious reasons, you never want a bed in the background. So what do you do? Use the ironing board. Here’s why:

As a lifelong Lord of the Rings fan, I never expected to hear Samwise's speech from the end of The Two Towers recited from the Speaker's Balcony. Yet here we are. Thanks for the visit, @SeanAstin!

I promised no spoilers as much as possible, but here is the basics for Disclosure Day. It is one of the most shocking pieces of propaganda I have seen in a while. It is the last call of the WWII consensus: aliens are your saviors and empathy is the only virtue. In a post-Epstein world, it dares have a story of children seduced and kidnapped by aliens pretending to be Disney-style animals, taken to Hansel and Gretel's house (this is what it is called in the movie) to be "imbued" by aliens in a way so traumatic that they forget and repress it until they are adults, only to discover that this initiation has given them the power to: See people's secret thoughts. Pretend to be other people and use that to manipulate. Make things in plain view disappear. Translate foreign and alien languages. Be a "passenger" for the alien's message to the world. This is nothing to say about its take on Christianity and the suggested apostasy around accepting these beings. Then finally the entire movie is a final desperate appeal to the traditional media as the only purveyors of truth. The entire drama of the film is a man who has irrefutable video proof of aliens looking to release it. The whole movie is a series of chases against the evil corporation that wants to keep it hidden. He ends up releasing it on the evening news! Yes, you heard me. He releases it on the evening news which is then transmitted to all the traditional media companies that are named: ABC, CNN, Fox News etc. Anyone under 70 will realize that the movie could have ended in 10 minutes with a laptop and wifi. It is really mad. Don't go see it.

NEW: The Mellon Foundation gave $1.5 million to establish a "center for the defense of academic freedom." In audio I've obtained, the group's leader says his goal is to undermine the newly launched classical civics centers: "map who these f---ers are... and knock them out." 🧵

Unrelated, but I was surprised to hear Disclosure Day being advertised / sponsoring the @TheRestHistory podcast which is an interesting comment on advertising I thought
Disclosure Day: The Last Boomer Propaganda Movie I went to see Spielberg’s Disclosure Day and found myself watching a strange, late-stage piece of boomer propaganda about aliens, media, religion, and who we are supposed to trust. Here are my thoughts on the symbolism of the film.

What actually happened: 20 of the least conservative House Republicans voted with all Democrats to advance legislation backed by Big Labor and first pushed under Obama to empower an agency that Trump slashed to force union contracts on workplaces.
For decades, labor reform stagnated. Labor leaders funded the Democratic party and made unrealistic demands (which were sometimes unpopular with the workers they were supposed to represent) and the Republican party seemed content to let worker power wither. Now, writes @oren_cass, a small but growing cadre of pro-worker conservatives is scrambling that playing field. ft.com/content/c05dab53-e991…

“The honest answer is that the Orthodox parish is operating on a different model entirely. Frankly, it’s an ancient one, sometimes inherited from village and immigrant community life, where membership was assumed, belonging was demonstrated by showing up, and no one needed to be sold on attending because the Church was the center of the community. ‘Church’ is simply what the community did and had done for centuries. That model has real virtues. It does not produce the manipulative retention machinery of megachurch culture. But it also leaves people to slip through the cracks in silence, and in an American context where almost no one arrives already embedded in Orthodox community life, it can amount to a pastoral failure. “Catechumens and new converts need to be warned clearly: The Church will not pursue you the way your last church did. That is not a sign that you are unwanted. It is a sign that you are expected to invest beyond what is intellectually, metrically, and individually stimulating to you. You are expected to show up, introduce yourself, stay for coffee, come back next week and the week after. Orthodoxy is ancient. It cares little for what the culture prescribes and precedes it by millennia. Belonging here is something you build, not something you are handed.” open.substack.com/pub/fracto…

A “pro-worker” bill that takes power away from workers 🤨 The Faster Labor Contracts Act promises quicker union agreements, but it would actually just let federal arbitrators impose contracts workers never approved.
