Within days, India raised import duties on precious metals and moved silver bars from Free to Restricted. DGFT Notification 7/2026-27. May 16. Immediate effect. This looks like a sequence of measures responding to the same FX stress, not a coincidence. The backdrop explains why. Gold imports hit $71.98 billion in 2025-26, up 58% in two years. Crude jumped from $69 to $109 a barrel since February. FIIs pulled $29 billion out of Indian equities. The rupee lost over 5% since late February. Every dollar spent on gold or silver is a dollar India cannot spend on oil. That is the constraint. So the sequence: May 11 - Modi appeals: stop buying gold, cut foreign travel, use public transport.
