On my final day in office as @UNRWA Commissioner-General, I salute the 30,000 people who make the Agency what it is. Over the past six years, across Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, I have seen first-hand the extraordinary dedication with which they serve Palestine Refugees in the harshest of environments. Every day, UNRWA teams uphold the Agency's @UN General Assembly mandate with determination and compassion, often in conditions that test the limits of human endurance. A shocking figure: 87 children are being killed or injured every day as conflict escalates across the Middle East, according to @TedChaiban of @UNICEF.  This should focus minds across the region and beyond. How many more children will lose their lives? passblue.com/2026/03/23/an-a…

I told @mehdirhasan that the scale of the displacement in the Occupied West Bank is the largest in almost six decades. The violence is endless international law is being broken unashamedly. This dangerous spiral must be halted without delay.
“Thousands of Palestinian refugees have also been displaced… the biggest displacement since 1967.” @mehdirhasan speaks with UNRWA Commissioner-General @UNLazzarini about the dire conditions in Palestine, which have gone underreported since the beginning of the Iran war.

In my final lecture as UNRWA Commissioner-General, at the Geneva Graduate Institute, I said that gross violations of international law in conflict are not new. But what is new is that these violations are no longer hidden — they are even committed with pride. The world must not stay on this dangerous path. There must be a vigorous defence of our common humanity and shared values. Read my full remarks here ⬇️ unrwa.org/newsroom/official-…

Violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank continues unabated. The fact that large groups of settlers storm Palestinian communities, brutalise residents & torch buildings is an outrage in itself. But what is worse is that these egregious acts are accompanied by total impunity. The International Court of Justice has ruled that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is illegal & must cease. Yet settlers run riot, settlements expand & de facto annexation accelerates. That must end.

Gaza: 96% of children say they feel death is imminent. After more than two years of war & relentless violence, young Palestinians face a deepening mental health emergency. Girls are at particular risk, including a rise in child marriage, @UNFPA reports. news.un.org/en/story/2026/03…

Heartfelt wishes to everyone in the region & worldwide celebrating Eid al-Fitr. In these dark times may its message of peace be a reality for communities in the Middle East including #Palestine Refugees. #EidMubarak

Over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 2023. Almost a quarter of the victims were children. Rising violence by Israeli settlers & armed forces is accompanied and fueled by impunity. Meanwhile, de facto annexation continues to accelerate as settlements expand. The International Court of Justice has ruled that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is illegal & must cease. International law applies to everyone, everywhere. There can be no exceptions.
#Palestine: The #Israeli government accelerated unlawful settlement expansion & annexation in West Bank, forcibly displacing over 36,000 Palestinians amid increasing violence by Israeli security forces & settlers — new @UNHumanRights report. ohchr.org/en/press-releases/…

International law is being openly ignored. Impunity reigns & disproportionate actions are being normalised amid the escalating conflicts in the Middle East. It is a vicious circle: the more violations, the stronger the culture of impunity becomes. And this culture is even celebrated shamelessly. International law is not a menu to choose from. It applies to everyone, everywhere, without exception. Failing to call out abuses & allowing the law of the strongest to prevail will rebound across the globe.

Medical workers are #NotATarget. Impunity makes it a new norm. Time to make those responsible accountable.
The killings in the last 24 hours of 14 health workers in southern #Lebanon mark a tragic development in the escalating Middle East crisis. @WHO has confirmed that 12 doctors, paramedics and nurses were killed in a strike late last night on the Bourj Qalaouiyeh primary healthcare center. Just hours earlier, two paramedics lost their lives in attacks on a health facility in Al Sowana. These incidents highlight the ongoing assault on Lebanon’s healthcare system, which is crucial for the populations it serves. Since March 2, WHO has verified 27 attacks on healthcare in Lebanon, resulting in 30 deaths and 35 injuries, including the horrifying events of Friday. WHO condemns this tragic loss of life and emphasizes that health workers must always be protected. According to international humanitarian law, medical personnel and facilities should never be attacked or militarized. The intensification of conflict in Lebanon and the broader Middle East increases the likelihood of such tragedies. Urgent action is required to de-escalate the crisis and protect the health of people throughout the region.

Palestinians continue to endure grave suffering with so many restrictions imposed on humanitarian aid in Gaza, amid a worrying expansion of settlement activities in the occupied West Bank. Humanitarian access must be safe, sustained & unimpeded. The occupation must end. The inalienable rights of the Palestinian people must be realized. International law must be respected & accountability ensured. There is no viable alternative to the Two-State solution – Israel & Palestine living side-by-side in peace, security & dignity.

Endless cycles of war with - once again - hundreds of thousands of people in Lebanon forcibly displaced from their homes & entire villages and neighbourhoods reduced to rubble. Enough! People in Lebanon, already facing severe hardship & exhausted by previous wars, need safety & stability. For Palestine Refugees, this is yet another blow, adding fear, destruction & disruption to communities already on the edge. The war must stop now. Civilians must be protected. Essential services must be preserved. Meanwhile #UNRWAworks every day in the camps under rising challenges.

I am truly appreciative of Prime Minister @sanchezcastejon’s unequivocal stance & for standing firm in support of multilateralism international law at a time when the world is questioning the essence of the United Nations Charter.

Thank you @jmalbares & Spain for exemplary political & financial support to #Palestine Refugees @UNRWA. This principled stand is even more important at a time of a rapidly deteriorating situation in the Middle East & a relentless assault on the United Nations.

On #InternationalWomensDay, my thoughts are with the many Palestine Refugee women & girls I have met across UNRWA’s operations. Science students in Lebanon on their way to becoming biomedical engineers. Refugee camp leaders in Jordan serving on community committees alongside their male counterparts. Artisans & entrepreneurs in Syria building businesses that sustain families & keep communities going. Many are also part of @UNRWA’s workforce. Doctors, nurses & pharmacists caring for patients under immense pressure. Teachers opening classrooms so children can keep learning when life around them feels uncertain. Social workers in the West Bank reaching families displaced multiple times. Counsellors in Gaza supporting those who have lost everything. As we advance rights #ForAllWomenForAllGirls, the voices, skills & leadership of Palestine Refugee women & girls must remain part of all conversations shaping their future.

Humanitarians are #NotATarget. Over and over in #Gaza, this fundamental principle of international law has been disregarded. This must end.
While the world’s attention is elsewhere, our #Gaza team continues to face unacceptable risks to deliver aid. Yesterday, a @UNOPS tanker on its way to collect urgently needed fuel for distribution inside Gaza was struck from the direction of the sea.  No one was injured. The tanker was however directly hit and damaged while empty, en route to the crossing to load. Our teams are taking extraordinary risks every day to keep humanitarian operations and life-sustaining services. They should not have to do that under fire.  I call for a full investigation into this latest incident. Fuel must be allowed into Gaza consistently, its delivery facilitated safely and without interruption to keep humanitarian operations and essential services running: hospitals, water and sewage systems and bakeries. #NotATarget

Yet again, spiraling violence across the region is forcing thousands to flee their homes in Southern Lebanon. Today’s evacuation orders of 4 neighborhoods in Southern Beirut are creating panic & greater forced & mass displacement. As part of broader Lebanese authorities & civil society efforts, @UNRWA has opened emergency shelters for displaced people — Palestine Refugees, Lebanese & Syrians alike. Lebanon needs peace not more destruction, displacement & death.

The Middle East has become the deadliest place in the world: - to be a medical worker - to be a humanitarian - to be a UN team member - to be a journalist And one of the deadliest to be a civilian. This cannot be normalised. International humanitarian law matters. Accountability matters.
The expansion of the conflict in the Middle East is increasingly impacting health services throughout the region. I am saddened by the developments in #Lebanon today where 3 paramedics were killed and another 6 injured while recovering people injured by explosions in the *southern Tyre district.* The risk that more health workers will count among the casualties is high. This must be avoided at all costs, so paramedics, doctors and nurses can be allowed to carry out their life-saving work, which is especially needed in times of crisis. Warring parties must abide by international humanitarian law and protect health workers, facilities and patients. I call for the utmost restraint and for voices of wisdom and peace to rise above sound of bombings. Peace is the best medicine. x.com/WHOLebanon/status/2028…
