Thrilled to announce that I will be starting my independent career at @ChemistryUIUC this fall. The Strauss Group (@SRG_Chem) will work at the interface of synthetic methods development and polymer science to uncover new strategies in polymer design and functionalization.

Azorellolide! How can you not work on a natural product that starts with "Azo"? Great collaboration with @TantilloLab. I have to say my respect for carbocations has enormously gown through this project. They are just too high in energy and have too many options. But you can tame them! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jac…

We have recently disclosed a new 5-step (or 6) synthesis of the marine natural product ( )-cylindricine B in @ChemicalScience for all to read (pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/Arti…). This was a heroic effort from graduate student @potato_dal and undergraduate student @nobeard3.

Congrats to Dylan and Stephen for their method to glycosylate cotylenol and access 14-3-3 protein-client molecular glues! tinyurl.com/2y45ck4n Donor linker design was aided by Stephen’s “autoDFT” and solved a common problem in terpenoid synthesis: contrasteric glycosylation.

Beautiful strategy!! Congratulations to the whole team!
A moment I've been waiting for. I present my first-cofirst author manuscript: An oxidative photocyclization approach to the synthesis of skeletally-diverse Securiflustra securifrons alkaloids Lucky to be able to do it with some great friends! chemrxiv.org/engage/chemrxiv…

Johnny Cash eating cake in a bush, 1971. The photo was taken for the back of his album "Strawberry Cake," which was released in 1976. Cash also added a note accompanying this photo, which read: "On a hot summer afternoon in New York City, June and I walked through the zoo in Central Park. It was a hot dog and ice cream day. The place was crowded, and giving up on the hassle of working our way through the crowd, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the concert that night at the Garden State Art Center. As we approached the hotel, I saw a bum lying on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. He never even opened his eyes when I stood over him. June said, 'Come On, Honey,' but I said, 'just a minute.' I walked around him, hoping he wasn't dead. My shadow fell across him, and when I moved on, I saw his eyes flutter as the bright sunlight hit his face. He didn't open his eyes, but I knew he wasn't dead. 'What are you doing?' June asked. 'I'm thinking about my friend here,' I said. 'that could be me, you know.' June came over closer and smiled at me. 'That was you a couple of times.' Then she said again, 'Come on, let's go.' The rest of the story is in the song. I became that man. I put myself in his place and in my mind, he finally won. I wish I knew who he is and where he is. I'd send him a piece of Strawberry Cake."
