Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for young people, yet they remain overlooked. We can change that. That’s why @bloombergdotorg is committing $350 million to make streets safer and support cycling infrastructure worldwide.

"We build our American cities around fire trucks… …We should design our cities, then make the fire trucks fit." In America, we have the largest fire trucks in the world— and they’re quietly shaping how our cities look, feel, and function. In this clip with @AustinTunnell , we break down how one overlooked policy is leading to worse urban design.

For over a decade, the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended BAC limits of 0.05 or lower. Member Tom Chapman testified in support of HB 308 to reduce Alaska’s DUI limit from 0.08 to 0.04. This is the standard. Globally, 84% of countries are at 0.05 or lower. #akleg

"Just as pedestrian plazas, bus lanes, and bike lanes have reshaped how people experience the city, outdoor dining reminded us that our streets can better serve our communities."

It’s time for us to save outdoor dining—make it year-round and cut the red tape. “Streets once dominated by parked cars became lively public spaces filled with conversation, energy, and community.” Commissioner Mike Flynn’s op-ed: nydailynews.com/2026/03/15/i…

USDOT has found that restricting parking near intersections can reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 30%. Cities around the country have found similar benefits. 1/4
Replying to @RVA_DOT
Excessive clearance as shown has no proven safety benefit at stop-controlled intersections as in the image. A few feet would suffice on the narrow street depicted. So intellectually lazy.

If you cannot charge this woman because she's too old, then we should not allow the elderly to drive, given we are saying that they're immune from their actions behind a wheel that we give them license to.

The US Highway system is as impressive and tragic as the atomic bomb: great minds and vast resources applied to a difficult problem to the destruction of our cities and society. US roads have been the leading cause of child death—without a close second—for nearly a century.

Crash Energy = (1/2) x (mass) x (speed squared) Speed is the fundamental factor in severe crashes. People will make mistakes behind the wheel, but the outcomes don't have to be catastrophic. Slow down. Use cruise control if you have to.

Would be great if our society treated driving safety violations as serious as the general narrative around fare evasion. And I’m not saying fare evasion isn’t a problem, it is; but dangerous driving is killing & injuring people daily and it needs to be taken more seriously.

a driver just ran a red light and almost hit me in midtown. I looked up the license plate and this car has 70 school zone speeding violations in the past 6 months, including a single day with four tickets! it’s absolutely absurd that this driver is allowed to stay on our roads
