That market power IS power does not simply mean that large firms can get their way. It means that free-market capitalism and democracy work well together only when competition disciplines firms, keeping them focused on economic efficiency rather than political goals.

In equilibrium, as this paper shows, de facto power tracks standard measures of market power, survives bans, taxes, and technocratic delegation, and can skew innovation toward regulation-resistant technologies. By @grattonecon & @bartonelee2 at @ETH_en buff.ly/fkYG29M

So why is market power *power*? In Market Power IS Power, @bartonelee2 and I argue that firms can shape democratic political outcomes if and only if they possess market power. 1/.

Newly updated working paper out on this topic, using exogenous C-SPAN channel positioning for identification. (with the peerless @gloriagennaro)
Congress put cameras in the chamber in 1979. Speeches got measurably more emotional after that. @gloriagennaro and @ellliottt scored 6 million speeches from 1858 to 2014. Emotional content was flat for a century, then it jumped. It hasn't come back down.

Here is a new paper on zero-sum thinking. We show that greater zero-sumness increases contributions to public goods while reducing social connectedness. See: ucf81a6039f8bd853692e600a0b2…

I am happy to share two pieces of news: For the 2026-2027 academic year. I will join the Litowitz Center for Enlightened Disagreement @KelloggSchool as a postdoc working with @EliJFinkel and Nour Kteily. Then, in Fall 2027, I will join @LSEGovernment as an Assistant Professor. I am incredibly excited about both positions and grateful to friends, family, mentors and co-authors who have helped me along the way. I am excited to be doing more work on strategic voting, democratic norms, field experiments and many other topics. So please reach out if you are Evanston or London (or anywhere else I suppose).

More laws, more growth. Economists at ETH Zurich tracked every US state statute from 1965–2012 using machine learning and found that states passing more legislation grew faster — but only because of one specific feature buried in legal text. [@ellliottt and co-authors, JPE 2025]
