As a soft westerner, I must admit that I have a hard time watching the drone videos killing Russian invaders. Such tactics are necessary and it is good the Ukraine is deploying them. That being said, there is a helplessness to them that has always left me feeling that a combatant’s ability to surrender in the face of certain death is being removed.
I am glad to see videos like this, not only because it means that surrender for those who do not wish to fight is an option, but as an example of the humanity of Ukrainians. Knowing only a fraction of the pain they have suffered at the hands of Russians, I could not and would not ask them to show such grace, yet they do so. They show restraint, a respect for life, and civility that they never could expect from their enemy in this war.
My support for Ukraine will never waiver, and I feel as though Ukraine and its people continue to validate that support.
🇺🇦 Russian soldiers surrendered with the help of a Ukrainian drone
The POWs said their commanders were sending them into suicide assaults and threatening to "zero them out" if they refused.
At their position, they found a leaflet with instructions on how to surrender, laid down their weapons, and waited for a Ukrainian drone, which guided them safely away from the front line.
Now they are urging other Russians not to sign military contracts, avoid the war, and, if already at the front, surrender.
“If you see one of these leaflets, follow the instructions. Everything will be fine — a drone will come, guide you out safely, and you'll be welcomed and given water,” one of the soldiers said.
