Building a team in esports is similar to building a team in any business. If you want it to be effective, you need to hire for both competency and cultural fit. One of my favourite performance models boils things down into just that; competency and the mental game. Culture can be seen as a collective mental game; the operational standards, values and vision that is shared by a team provides a source of motivation, resiliency, energy and creativity.
When a team is in sync, it is a powerful driver for results. If you hire individuals that are not able to synchronize with this, their competency doesn't matter, as they will quickly poison the cultural well and no amount of skill will make up for this type of damage. As the well is poisoned, so too will the quality of output amongst those who work on your team. If one member doesn't follow the standards, the standards will begin to lose meaning and others will be more incentivized to drop their standards. As the standards collectively lose meaning, the identity of the team will start to dissolve. As the identity dissolves, so too will the vision and purpose. The final result? An underperforming, unmotivated and dejected team.
