New (big) release ! 🎉

It took a long time, but finally I’m glad to announce a new release (re-written from scratch) of Fastscapelib: a core library for landscape evolution modelling Some highlights 🧵 (1/8)

Last summer for @GFZ_SurfMod's contribution to LNDW23, #fastscape was used together with Jupyter widgets to create a special kind of photo booth. A fun way to show how landscape evolution models work!

📢Tectonic Modelling Tuesday #40 - cool numerical work by @GrardBenjamin2 & co. (from @Univ_Toulouse @LPG_Lab @uibgeo @GeosciencesR @TotalEnergies @GFZ_SurfMod) exploring how inherited foreland relief affects retro-foreland basin architecture!😃 Details: doi.org/10.1029/2022JB024967

Do you want to hear how a landscape near steady-state condition sounds like? 🔊🔊⛰️🔊🔊
Replying to @benbovy
As a last example, a landscape evolution simulation made with @fastscape where the frequencies of two oscillators are modulated by the uplift vs erosion rates (we can here the interference near the steady-state). (animation made with ipygany / ipyfastscape) 8/N

Our new single “1 to 6” (with my band mates #Roscoe) is out today! I had a lot of fun doing a video clip using @fastscape and @matplotlib! Full video: youtube.com/watch?v=zXk3kkH4…

Check out my talk on using the ASPECT-FastScape coupling to model a new type of flexural strike-slip basin, and briefly on applying orographic controls to 2D compression and subduction models with @sasbrune and @MichaPons @fastscape @cigeodynamics youtu.be/2dZ6UVUXeao

Just wanted to share the fun I'm having feeding @fastscape with a 3D folded landscape (w differential erodibility and diffusion). Top is the "geological map" and bottom is the water flux

My colleague Derek Neuharth is coupling @fastscape LEM to the #ASPECT geodynamics code, we ran a quick subduction test, this is a step forward in modelling the interplay of deep and surface processes. Find more details below.

Couldn't wait to update and release ipyfastscape 0.2.0! 3D Visualization of topographic data and landscape evolution model outputs with ipygany. github.com/fastscape-lem/ipy…
#ipygany 0.5.0 is out! The Python library for scientific visualization in a @ProjectJupyter Notebook, powered by your GPU! This release adds support for JupyterLab 3 and new colormaps and colorbars. Repo: github.com/QuantStack/ipygan… Live docs: ipygany.readthedocs.io/

It can also be used for visualizing DEM data / derived data (not only model outputs), like terrain attributes here computed with @LSDTopoTools

Since it uses #xarray Datasets, it works seamlessly with @landlabtoolkit too (the example below is based on the LithoLayers component).

FWIW today, I've released ipyfastscape, which provides interactive widgets (#ipywidgets, #ipygany) for topographic data analysis and modelling in #jupyter notebooks (3D visualization!). Below is an example from @fastscape model runs. Check out github.com/fastscape-lem/ipy…

Just updated the example with a @fastscape erosion model run from the extracted topography 😀
From ipyleaflet (2D) to ipygany (3D), right here in the Jupyter Notebook!
