Thanks so much for this tweet! Very familiar with DMAIC, but new to PDSA, your tweet brings a distinction to PDSA and DMAIC. #IGetIt

The problem isn’t the tool, it’s the practitioner. Don’t blame the hammer for hitting a screw. Blame the carpenter for not using a screwdriver.
2
This is an example of DMAIC gone awry. Fortunately not all DMAIC is bad. And not all "C's" are "control for indefinite periods." DMAIC can still be cyclical and reflect continuous improvement. It's not usually drawn that way and often not executed that way, however.
2
The key is that PDCA/PDSA are learning cycles, and DMAIC and DMADV imply that #learning comes to an end once you achieve “control” or”verification.” Project is done, you move on. Have a party, hand out belts.

As I said the other day, “If we are arguing about which control chart to use, we have already won.” Same idea applies to these CI models?
3
I think DMAIC comes w/ the expectation that experts do the work, rather than the people involved in the process. But asking what’s the right methodology for lean is like asking whether you should use a red or a blue screwdriver: they accomplish the same thing if used correctly.

If a client doesn’t have an established methodology in place, we always suggest PDSA (with CLEAR questions as a booster). But if they’ve already rolled out another methodology, we avoid introducing the confusion and relearning required with a new method.
1
Personally, I don't care for DMAIC (I prefer PDSA or a "Toyota Business Practice" approach, which is PDSA based)

You can use whatever structure you prefer as long as you're answering key questions. Have you seen/considered my CLEAR questions from #ClarityFirst, which you can overlay on any methodology you'd like in order to get better results?

Is it ok to use #DMAIC instead of #PDCA methodology for lean ?..I always feel its not right, but can not pin point..help @LeanLab2009 @LeanDotOrg @PlanetLean @Juran_Institute @LeanPathways @Michael_Balle @MarkGraban @paulakers @KarenMartinOpEx @leanmanpaul @danmarkovitz @ASQLED
