Another reason for appimage, where the binary distribution for somebody not willing to compile onself is always in the hands of the author and where the author can keep the critical deps such as networking up to date even when running on old distros. Sorry about your mother.

Appimage could load binary modules (.so) built at the same system against the same deps, built on the same linux docker as the appimage.

Appimage is wasteful indeed, but 14 MB Appimage is not that bad compared to 8 MB Windows or Mac, statically linking all the radio modules. Appimage hurts a perfectionist, but it works well in real world. github.com/bubnikv/SDRPlusPl…

Appimage and flatpak are wasteful and don't work for apps that use a binary module system instead of scripts (you can't easily add random .so files). One that includes the same modules as the official deb releases would be several hundred MB.

I rewrote your build system to build and link all the deps statically on all OS including Linux AppImage and Android. github.com/bubnikv/SDRPlusPl… github.com/bubnikv/SDRPlusPl… appimage is based on github.com/ilikehamradio/SDR… The build system is inspired by the PrusaSlicer deps build system.

I guess you can simply overwrite your existing files then. But hope for an appimage version eventually. 🙏🙏

This. It works fine, except you'd be not capitalizing on certain benefits from Cachy. However AppImage is probably the way to go after Flatpack announced moves toward a hard dependency on systemd in the next major version (while systemd adds an unjustified age verification field)
