SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [7 Oct]: 🤖 Google confirms roll out of AI-organised search results. The rollout will begin with recipe pages and expand to "questions that may be open-ended or have no single right answer." Is this the beginning of the end of traditional SERPs? 🔍 Google Lens is adding new ways to search using videos, photos and voice. Users can now search by combining recording a video or taking a photo with asking a question in real-time. 🕷️ TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is scraping data quickly and aggressively. Bytespider (ByteDance's crawler) is scraping data 25 times faster than OpenAI's GPTbot and 3,000 times faster than Anthropic's ClaudeBot. 🎠 Google is testing a full-width rich card section at the top of ecommerce searches. This new card features a 2x4 grid of products, a list of 5 popular stores, and some informational content on the righthand side. via @brodieseo 🔋 Google has replaced the 'EnergyConsumptionDetails' schema with 'Certification'. This is the latest in a series of product-focused structured data updates Google has been making in 2024. ⚠️ Google cautions against using JavaScript for Product schema. A new addition to the schema documentation warns that "dynamically-generated markup can make Shopping crawls less frequent and less reliable". via @gofishchris 📈 Google introduces CrUX Vis, a new Core Web Vitals tool that visualises your site performance. CrUX Vis allows users to track the bigger picture of a site's performance across devices and network. via @carlhendy 📑 Google Search Console Performance reports are now sticky. This means that if you set a filter in a Performance report, it will remain when changing to another Performance report. ⬇️ Google is testing moving a business' products to the bottom of the Knowledge Panel. This would be a controversial move as most businesses would likely wish to highlight their products over things such as their social media links. via @GuideTwit 🗳️ Bing's generative search will be expanding for complex informational queries. This feature is still in beta and experiencing significant loading times according to some initial feedback. 📊 Google Search's recent ranking volatility has continued into October. This marks the longest period of "heated search volatility" ever recorded despite the fact that the August 2024 core update was completed over a month ago. via @rustybrick 🏷️ Google has removed its noarchive documentation. This follows up on the removal of the cache: search operator and the addition of links to the Internet Archive. 💌 If you like these updates, they are curated and sent out every Monday in our CoreUpdates[dot]com newsletter, along with 5 SEO tips, and a deep dive podcast with Jack Chambers-Ward. SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know: 🏷️ Google will label images as taken by a camera, edited or AI-generated. This will include an update to the 'about this image' feature and will roll out to ads and YouTube as well. via @rustybrick 🎖️ Google is testing a 'Top Quality Store' badge on SERPs. This had previously been tested on mobile but has been seen in organic desktop results recently. This is similar to the other features aimed at increasing trust via verification. via @brodieseo 🕷️ Google has updated the crawler documentation. The previously large single page has now been split into three more granular pages and the overview now includes examples of robots.txt and affected products sections. via @martinibuster 🗃️ Schema org v28.0 has been released. This update aligns schemaorg more closely to the Google Merchant Center specifications as well as updating some classes and enumerations. via @JarnoVanDriel 📈 AI Overviews are shown more often to signed-in users. There is a reported 10-20% drop for signed-out users. However, this jumps up to 90% less often for ecommerce queries. via @MrDannyGoodwin 🔍 AI Overviews are predominantly triggered by informational searches. This is unsurprising but across a study of over 1 million queries that triggered AIO, over 96% had an informational search intent. via @marktraphagen 📊 Google has provided guidance on monitoring your Core Web Vitals in DevTools. There is also a redesigned Performance panel page as well as guidance on local and real-user experience data. via @rick_viscomi ✨ Google is using SynthID’s watermarking technique to detect AI content. SynthID is able to embed watermarks that are undetectable to humans into AI-generated text, images and video. 📍 Bing Places has a new support contact form. This will allow you to submit a support ticket directly to Bing if you have any issues with your Bing Places listings. ▶️ Google is now showing videos in the top insights section for products. This appears to start with YouTube but may expand to other video services in the future as they become more prevalent on SERPs. 📑 AI Overviews citations don't always reflect the organic rankings. While YouTube continues to be the most cited domain in AI Overviews, Reddit, which has dominated SERPs in recent months, is underrepresented in AIO. via @Kevin_Indig 🍝 Google now shows reviews and menu descriptions under photos on Maps and GBP. If this remains long-term, this makes the reviews and menu information listed on a restaurant's GBP even more important than before. 💌 If you like this kind of tl;dr news, I curate and send it out weekly, along with 5 SEO tips and a deep dive podcast on our newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com Links for everything in my next tweet ⬇

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [16 Sep]: 🗃️ Google Search results now link directly to The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. This new relationship between with the non-profit archive site follows up on Google removing cached pages on SERPs earlier this year. via @NexusBen 📍 Google will now sanction GBP accounts with fake reviews, with three levels of severity. The potential restrictions include not receiving new reviews, unpublishing existing reviews and displaying a public warning to users. via @GuideTwit ⚠️ Google has added a spam warning to the indexing API documentation. The documentation emphasises their strict spam detection and uses exceeding quotas an example activity that may lose you access to the API. via @MattGSouthern 🎠 Product carousels are back in AI Overviews for commercial queries. Google has previously tested this feature and this reinforces the importance of good content, structured data and information for your product detail pages. via @aleyda 🇬🇧 Google UK was the ranking page if you search for 'Google' in the US, Australia and other regions. International SEO is hard, right? Maybe Google forgot their own hreflangs 🗣️ Voice-powered AI chat is free and available now for Android users. From Google's announcement, Gemini Live allows users to search the web, ask questions, brainstorm ideas and even rehearse using your voice. 🧑‍⚖️ The 'site reputation abuse' policy was never implemented algorithmicallybecause they "wouldn't be exceedingly careful and thoughtful in how [they] do it". Quite the contrast to the seemingly chaotic rollout of the HCU. via @lilyraynyc 📑 AI Overviews are more likely to include citations to content with strong ranking. The study of over 11,000 queries found that the first ranking result was cited 53% of the time while positions 2-6 had a 40% chance of inclusion. via @gofishchris 🔍 Young internet users no longer use "Google" as a verb for searching. In a small but possibly significant shift, this 'de-verbing' appears to be driven by the democratisation of search across other platforms like Amazon and TikTok. 🍏 Apple has announced Visual Intelligence, their equivalent of Google Lens. Apple appear to be integrating services like Google, ChatGPT and OpenTable into their version of visual search. via @rustybrick 💌 If you like these kind of updates, I send them out weekly, along with 5 SEO tips and a deep-dive SEO podcast at my free newsletter CoreUpdates[dot]com Links to everything in my next tweet ⬇️

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [9 Sep]: 🔍 Initial reactions to SearchGPT, OpenAI's prototype search engine, have been mixed so far. Users have reported the typical hallucinations and incorrect information but also some better performance for certain types of queries. ⛕ 26% of URLs ranking in SearchGPT don't receive traffic from Google. This could present new visibility opportunities. SearchGPT uses Bing's index and its results were found to be 73% similar to Bing. via Anastasia Kotsiubynska @SERanking 📈 The August core update has completed its rollout as of 3 September 2024. There have been reports of recovery for some sites affected by last year's HCU as well as negatively impacting other well-known sites. 🧪 Sites hit by Google's Helpful Content system tend to have lower ratios of "Brand Authority" to "Domain Authority" according to a new study, hinting when your brand is weaker than your backlink profile, you may be at risk. via @THCapper 📊 Google "can't promise full recoveries" but do "think that some sites will continue see good gains." In a lengthy interview, Danny Sullivan gave some characteristically vague answers regarding the recent big Google updates. via @rustybrick 🔥 @semrush has rolled out AI Overview tracking in both Organic Research and Domain Overview, rather than just in Position Tracking. This means you can analyse any website, not just the ones you have setup to track. ✨ @yoast AI Optimize, an AI-powered content creation assistant, has launched. This new free addition to the popular WordPress plugin can help with recommendations for including keywords in your content. 🛍️ Organic product grids showing in the SERPs for ecommerce queries have been steadily growing with the UK experiencing an 11 percentage point increase compared to April last year. via @brodieseo 🔗 Google's canonical documentation has been updated to clarify that URLs with fragments are ignored. If you use these URLs are anchor links (identified by the # in the URL), be aware that only the primary URL will be canonical. via @davewsmart 📑 Google is testing a new format for forum content on SERPs. As if there wasn't enough forum content on the SERPS (hello Reddit), this feature will highlight "top comments" and "related content" for certain queries. 🐤 Google appears to have merged the "Articles carousel" into the "Latest posts" SERP features into a single. The "Latest posts" carousel can now contain both articles and social shares (like X, Threads, etc.) via @glenngabe ▶️ The YouTube Liaison has provided some updated information about ranking factors for YouTube. This Q&A includes advice for titles, formats, file names and release schedules for video creators. 💌 If you like these updates and don't want to miss out, I send them out every Monday on our newsletter CoreUpdates[dot]com. SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [2 Aug]: ✍️ Google may use the og title as a source for your title on the SERPs. OG data is seen when content is shared on social media. It is customisable on most CMS platforms so may be worth including in your future content audits. via @rustybrick 🧑‍⚖️ Yelp has sued Google regarding their "monopoly of local search". This is another in a long list of lawsuits Google has been hit with regarding its monopolistic status across the various niches in search. via @kimdavis_ 📈 You can now include/exclude dimensions in your report charts in GA4. This is a welcome addition that allows users to simplify and narrow down charts to important information. And yes, you could previously do this on UA. via Kyle Rushton McGregor 🖼️ Google now supports AVIF in Google Search. AVIF is an increasingly popular image format and is already supported by many platforms including WordPress and Cloudflare. 📉 Not even 22 million links will save you from a core update. This contrasts the belief by many SEOs that links are the answer in fighting the negative impact of core updates (the Google kind, not the newsletter). via @glenngabe 💎 Gemini Advanced subscribers can now create AI-powered topic experts called Custom Gems. Despite Google's insistence on expertise and first-hand experience, you can create GEMs for career advice, coding and more. 🧑‍💻 Google has updated its documentation for Organization structured data. The updates include how schema can influence knowledge panels and how to disambiguate your organisation from others by using the right properties. via @martinibuster 📱 Some Android users are receiving notifications to 'Choose your search engine'. While this is very unlikely to be caused by the recent Google antitrust trial loss, it could be an omen of the future if Google loses its appeal. via @witczyk 🍪 Google has launched Tag Diagnostics and a new consent management platform. Tag Diagnostics can help resolve issues in GA4, GTM and Google Ads while the CMP relates to cookie management and data privacy. via @TheMarketingAnu 🎞️ Google has clarified that a YouTube video and the same content published as text aren't considered duplicates. Martin Splitt noted that some users prefer one format over the other so having both is beneficial, not detrimental. 💌 If you like these updates and don't want to miss them, I send them out weekly along with SEO tips and a deep dive podcast for free on our newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com Links to everything in my next tweet ⬇️

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [27 Aug]: 🚫 The Federal Trade Commission has banned AI-generated reviews. The FTC chain announced that these reviews "waste people's time and money", this has the potential to impact local SEO, with some companies buying reviews. via @myriamjessier 🤖 Google has confirmed the AI Overview links and citations are impacted by Google Core Updates. When asked, Google's John Mueller said "These are part of search, and core updates affect search, so yes." via @rustybrick 📈 Google's ranking issue has been resolved. This issue was confirmed on 16 August 2024 and resolved on 20 August 2024. The crossover between this issue and the core update may cause delays in recovery. ☑️ Google is testing verification icons on SERPs. This is not a paid feature. Hovering over the icons reveals that this verification is because "Google's signals suggest that this business is the business that it says it is." via @brodieseo 👀 Google appear to have rolled out larger favicons on SERPs. This could potentially relate to the verification icons above as users look for reassurance that a website is what it says it is. 📑 99.5% of AI Overviews include a top 10 web result. This is a significant shift for AIO as they would previously feature content from lower-ranking pages. So, to optimise for AI Overviews you should simply optimise for Google! via @marktraphagen 📊 Tracking metrics from AI Overviews in Google Search Console continues to be difficult. There have been calls for AI Overview filtering options in GSC, similar to featured snippets, but currently, there is no consistent method. via @brodieseo ☁️ Google has quietly launched a new crawler, Google-CloudVertexBot. This crawler is related to advanced website indexing but is not currently part of the crawling or indexing of public websites. via @martinibuster 📋 Google had updated the documentation on Search Appearances. The new table describes the Search Appearance, API values and bulk export fields for a variety of SERP features including rich results and merchant listings. 🎞️ Google also updated its video SEO documentation. The update clarifies video indexing requirements, technical requirements, and added a new 'watch page' section. via @glenngabe 💌 If you like these updates and don't want to miss them, I send them out every Monday for free, along with curated SEO tips and a deep dive podcast at my newsletter CoreUpdates[dot]com ⬇ Links to everything in my next tweet - don't forget to join over 5,500 other SEOs in our newsletter!

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [19 Aug]: 📈 Google has launched the August 2024 core update. This appears to be a response to the September 2023 Helpful Content Update with some affected sites beginning to see some recovery for the first time according to @lilyraynyc ❌ An ongoing issue is affecting rankings in Google Search. This incident was first reported on 15 August 2024 and Google has confirmed that it is unrelated to the core update rollout. ✨ The latest update to AI Overviews has arrived. AI Overviews are now available in six new countries, specific results can saved for future reference and site links are now displayed at the end of paragraphs. 📑 Google has also updated its documentation about core updates (we don't mean this newsletter). The update includes advice for checking if rankings have dropped in GSC and how to assess large drops in positions. via @aleyda 🔑 A "Mentioned in key answers" feature is being tested in Google SERPs. Most reported cases seem to be famous people when their name is mentioned in a featured snippet. via @gaganghotra_ 🪓 Google may be forced to 'break up' elements of its business such as Android, Chrome and Google Ads. This follows the recent antitrust trial loss but is seen as "a severe response" to the trial decision by reports from Bloomberg. 🗳️ Over 30% of SEOs believe core updates have been the main source of traffic instability over the last year. The latest SEJ State of SEO report also includes other barriers to SEO success such as budget limitation. via @Juxtacognition 📊 GSC doesn't only show 35% of your performance data. This statistic from the GSC recommendations last week has been misinterpreted and the amount of available data can vary depending on the site. via @rustybrick 💌 If you like tldr SEO news like this and don't want to miss it, I send these updates every Monday (along with SEO tips and a deep dive podcast) on my completely free newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com Links to everything in my next tweet ⬇️

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [12 Aug]: ⚖️ A federal judge has ruled that Google is an illegal monopoly and violates anti-trust laws. This decision comes primarily from Google's practice of paying companies such as Apple to be the default search engine on their devices. 🕵️ Google is introducing recommendations to Google Search Console. This is different to the Insights feature and will provide suggestions about indexing, structured data and even relevant trends for your site. 💎 The 'hidden gems' update has given massive growth to Reddit, Quora and other forums. This is fallout from the 2023 core updates (pun intended) and many forums have seen over 100% increase in visibility year-on-year. via @glenngabe 🎢 There has been a lot of SERP volatility over the last few weeks to the next core update. This doesn't appear to include any positive direction for sites affected by the September 2023 helpful content update. 📍 You should be adding localities to your title tags to improve your local reach. Including them in the title tags has shown a 16% increase in GBP actions. And no, Google doesn't care that your title tag is too long. via @DarrenShaw_ 📈 Google has provided new insights into Google Trends data. These insights include that Google Trends only uses a sample of data and that it cleans the "noise" such as the same user repeating the same search. via @martinibuster ⛔ Reddit is considering adding AI-power search results. Reddit's search function has been infamously bad for years so we hope this will allow easier discovery of new topics and communities. via @MattGSouthern 📊 AI Overviews link to at least one domain from the top 10 organic search results in over 93% of case. This research from SE Ranking also includes the frequency of AIOs according to niche and the most-linked domains. via @SERanking 💌 If you like these kinds of updates, you can get them sent to your inbox every Monday, for free - along with 5 SEO tips and a deep-dive SEO podcast by subscribing at CoreUpdates[dot]com ⬇️ Links to everything are in my next tweet Big thanks to @JLWChambers for compiling this week's news!

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [5 Aug]: 📉 There may have been a big Bing update launched at the end of May 2024. Glenn Gabe has reported significant volatility, the largest since Bing's previous update in January 2023. 🗺️ Google may make hreflangs less important with a shift towards automatic language detection. @methode, on Search Off The Record, said that he thinks organic search "will rely less on annotations" in the near future. via @MattGSouthern 🔞 Google has updated how it handles explicit fake content to remove them from image searches. Google will demote sites that have include these types of images based, similar to how they handle other types of harmful content. 🔍 Google can effectively render complex and dynamic JavaScript content, according to a detailed study from Vercel & MERJ. This study recommends embracing JavaScript and ensuring your rendering strategy is up-to-date. via @giacomozecchini @tempoimmaterial @ryansiddle @cramforce ⚖️ Perplexity's "Publisher's Program" will share ad revenue with select publishing partners. Is this kind of relationship the future of publishing in AI-powered search? 🖱️ Knowledge Panels for People and Topics are testing showing related entities in the "See also" section. Google has relied more on entities in Search in recent years and this dates back to a 2015 patent, analysed by the late Bill Slawski. via @gaganghotra_ ⛔ 14 of the top 1000 sites are now blocking the SearchGPT crawler OAI-SearchBot. This list includes big name publishers such as The New York Times, Wired, Vogue, GQ and the New Yorker. via @glenngabe 📣 Reddit CEO has called out Bing for scraping Reddit content. This follows on from Reddit's recent agreements with Google and OpenAI as well as Reddit's blocking of other search engines via robots.txt. 💌 If you like these tldr SEO updates, I send them out every Monday, along with a set of SEO tips and a deep dive podcast with Jack Chambers-Ward. SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [29 July]: ⛔ It has been confirmed that Reddit is now blocking Bing and, apparently, all major search engines except for Google, from crawling their website. Reddit denies this is connected to the $60M Google data deal. 🔍 OpenAI has launched SearchGPT, their AI-based search engine as a temporary prototype of new AI search features "that give fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources". 🤖 OAI-SearchBot is a new user-agent for SearchGPT from OpenAI. It is used to link to and surface websites in search results in the SearchGPT prototype, not train their GenAI models. via @iPullRank ✍️ Annotations are coming to Google Analytics 4 in Q4 this year. They'll be available via the API, you'll be able to have up to 1,000 per property and will be in the interface reports, not in explorations. via @braiscv ⚖️ Google has outlined behaviour standards for the Gemini chatbot, including "dos and don'ts" such as Gemini avoiding and or redirecting responses to questions that "could cause real-world harm or offence" via '@glenngabe 🍪 Google has backtracked on its decision to block third-party cookies in Chrome. and want to "introduce a new experience in Chrome that lets people make an informed choice that applies across their web browsing" 🖱️Bing has announced that a new AI answers interface will be tested soon. It's creatively named Generative Search Experience (GSE). They claim their early integration tests in search maintain the rate of clicks going to websites. via @SebAtkinson 📑Google's Gemini has added related content and links in its latest update. These can be accessed by clicking a carrot at the end of a paragraph. This appears to be an alternative to the citation links that Google removed in May. 💌 If you like these kind of updates and don't want to miss them, I send them out every Monday, along with 5 actionable SEO tips and a deep-dive podcast on my free newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com Links to everything in my next tweet ⬇️

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [15 July]: 🖼️ Google has added support for image metadata to label images as AI-manipulated or extended. The documentation has also taken the "AI-generated" label out of Beta, rolling out full support. 🌎 Country-specific SERP labels have been tested in Search. In the example discovered, the South African flag and "South African" appeared to the right of the title in the SERP. It is not clear yet how these are generated. 📊 SISTRIX analysis of Visibility Index over 5 countries suggests there was little more than normal activity to be seen during the period of this spam update rollout. This doesn’t mean that the change won’t have an effect in the future. via @chippy 🛍️ You can now manage your Merchant Center account-level shipping and return policies directly from Google Search Console, with return settings taking precedence over configuration on your website, including markup via @aleyda 🗣️ Google announced they're translating search results into 8 more languages, giving publishers an opportunity to increase traffic globally, although in reality, these translations tend to provide a very tiny percentage of overall traffic. via @martinibuster 📉 AI Overviews are now only showing for 7% of all queries, a new low. Some of the biggest visibility drops were on education, entertainment and ecommerce queries. Reddit and Quora are almost never cited anymore. via @mrdannygoodwin 💌 If you like these updates, I send them out every week for free on my newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com - along with 5 solicited SEO tips and a deep dive podcast with @jlwchambers Links to everything in my next tweet ⬇

SEO updates that you ✨NEED✨ to know [8 Jul]: ⏳ Google Search Console data experienced significant delays that are now resolved. Many users reported no clicks or impressions from 29 June - 3 July with delays of more than 100 hours. 0️⃣ Nearly 60% of Google searches end without a click in 2024, according to a study by @sparktoro . The study also found the introduction of AI Overviews coincided with a drop in mobile searches. via @randfish 💉 Using prompt injections can lead to Bing removing your website from search results. Prompt injection is when users try to convince LLMs to go outside of their restrictions to perform tasks. Bing's guidelines now strictly prohibit this. via @rustybrick 🤖 @cloudflare launches a new detection system to combat AI bots. This new system aims to reduce bot traffic and AI-powered scrapers. 🎠 Google has updated its guidelines about structured data for carousels. This includes using different markup such as ItemList for paginated category pages vs infinite scroll. 🖼️ Google has updated its guidelines for embedded images. This small change adds that "Google can find images in src attribute of <img> element (even when it's a child of other elements, such as the picture element)." ☕ Google confirms that soft 404s are bad as they waste crawl budget and are filtered out during indexing. @methode compared a soft 404 to a coffee shop advertising a menu online but not actually providing anything in the shop. 🔍 Google is testing a longer search bar. Searchers are using more words per search than ever so this change makes sense to accommodate this. 💌 If you like these updates and don't want to miss them, I send them out for free every Monday, along with SEO tips and a deep dive podcast on my free newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com Links to everything, below! ⬇

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨to know [24 June]: 🎰 The June 2024 spam update began rolling out on 20th June. According to Google, the update should take 1 week to complete, but this will be confirmed on the Search Status Dashboard. 🏢 Google is now using AI to generate business overviews within Google Business Profile (GBP) listings. These descriptions are new as they do not offer citations for the descriptions generated. via @brodieseo 🐛 Google suffered a significant indexing bug last week impacting many sites including Wall Street Journal, NY Times, CNN and Forbes not getting new pages indexed. The bug has since been resolved. 🧑‍⚖️ One billion DMCA requests were processed by Google in four months. Despite being illegal, fake DMCA takedown requests continue to be a problem for webmasters, with counter-notices taking weeks to be processed. 🌎 SEOFOMO has launched a free SEO job board. The site allows people to search for roles to set up alerts and currently, the board also appears to be free to employers to list job roles. via @aleyda 🍏 Apple now has an Applebot-Extended user-agent. This user-agent does not crawl web pages, but determines how data is used. Unless you opt-out via robots.txt data can be used to train Apple's AI features. via @rustybrick 🖼️ Losing your image thumbnail within Google SERPs is likely to be a quality issue, not a technical issue, according to Google. The statement comes after a technical review following many complaints from webmasters. via @rustybrick 💡A new free tool for those looking for domain ideas has been launched by @TheHodge , the founder of @littlewardenapp. FreeDomainIdeas helps you bulk scan for free domains around specific keywords. 💌 If you like these kind of SEO updates, I send them out weekly, along with solicited hashtag#SEO tips and a deep dive podcast on our free SEO newsletter at CoreUpdates[dot]com Links to everything in next tweet! ⬇
