#WED hosted Operation Unity in partnership with
@bt_uk bringing together leaders across Defence and industry to explore what real allyship looks like in action.
Huge thanks to our hosts at BT Group and to Mollie Hatton from the
#WED Strategic Leadership Board (SLB) for compering the day.
🔹 We opened with a powerful conversation between Jonathan (Jon) Cole CB OBE (BT), John "JW" Wariner (
@CGI_UKNEWS & WED SLB) led by Valerie Wilson (BT).
Key messages:
• “Allyship: don’t fake it, and don’t assume you know it all.” — Jon
• “War isn’t a science, it’s an art—we need diverse opinions to drive inclusion.” — JW
🔹 Our panel, Step Up: Allyship in Defence Leadership, chaired by Debbie Muldoon, featured Cdre Jo Deakin (
@RoyalNavy), Eleanor Hudson (BT), David Starling (Actica Consulting), Nick Snelling (Logiq & WED SLB) & Kenwyn Hughes BEng (Hons) Engineering CIWFM (
@VIVODefence), who shared candid reflections on success, mistakes, and everyday action.
Standout insights:
• Allyship means having people’s backs - Eleanor
• Actica launched reverse mentoring following WED’s Inclusion Blueprint event earlier this year- David
• “I tried to step in for someone and took their voice away, I now pause and reflect” - Nick
• Allyship is Empathy. Curiosity. Courage - Kenwyn
• "Sometimes we are part of the problem, being an ally means getting uncomfortable" - David
• Real progress needs curiosity, challenge, connection and time. — Jo
🔹 Interactive afternoon sessions included:
• You Said What? with Caitlín Chinnock (BT) & Vikki Stanley (Peregrine)
• The Allyship Challenge: Disrupting Bias Every Day with Major Will Matthews MA, CMgr FCMI, GCLI, IEng, QCF & Cpl Natasha Day MBE (British Army) & Eleanor Hudson.
• Inclusive Leadership: Shifting Culture, Driving Performance with Col Simon Farebrother MC (British Army), Nic Sharp (VIVO Defence Services) and Valerie Wilson.
A session with Debbie Muldoon followed to sum up the sessions and a key takeaway came from Valerie - "A rising tide lifts all boats.”
🔹 Closing reflections
Jonathan (Jon) Cole CB OBE emphasised keeping the conversation alive across teams, networks, and daily work, and the importance of authenticity and vulnerability.
"JW" relayed a resonant reminder: “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.”
Thank you to everyone who contributed, participated, attended and shared openly. A powerful day driving action, not just awareness. Thank you to Caitlín Chinnock for helping to organise such a powerful event and a huge thank you to BT Group once again for allowing us to use your amazing location with views and hospitality throughout the day.
