Now an Institute of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), CEPLAC has earned international acclaim, particularly for its genetic enhancement program. This initiative focuses on developing cocoa varieties that are more productive, pest-resistant, and infused with unique aromas and flavors. Brazil’s efforts gained global attention in 2010 when its producers won awards at the Salon du Chocolat in Paris, France, highlighting the country’s potential as a fine cocoa producer. Since then, Brazil has continued to collect accolades, and in 2018, the International Cocoa Organization (ICO) recognized it as a producer and exporter of “Fine or Flavored Cocoa.” With around 600,000 hectares of cocoa 🍫 farmland and 75,000 producers—60% of whom are small-scale family farmers— 🇧🇷 Brazil ranks as the world’s sixth-largest cocoa producer, yielding over 200,000 tons of cocoa beans annually. The states of Pará and Bahia dominate production, contributing about 96% of the national total. Smaller volumes come from states like Espírito Santo, Rondônia, Amazonas, and Mato Grosso, while emerging cultivation is taking root in #Roraima, Amapá, Ceará, Sergipe, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Tocantins, and others, signaling recent growth.
