CodeIgniter was created by EllisLab, released in ~2006, with the motto "A small footprint for people who need performance and simplicity".
Then BCIT took over and released CI3 in 2015.
The framework has its own quirks that we're happy to support now in @Code and @VisualStudio
Since 2011 more or less, and even more in 2013. This was when codeigniter was being sold by EllisLab which made me wonder what I needed to learn and I chose Laravel because of the documentation.
CodeIgniter was good when it came out, easy & fast.
Its future became uncertain the moment EllisLab decided to move away & they were hard pressed to find any maintainers for it.
Cool! TP was my first language along with Basic back in '89. Then Clipper and when Windows came it was 100% Delphi (even ISAPI web!). Still use modern Delphi sometimes. Codeigniter was Ellislab then BCIT and now maintained regularly by the community. Built from scratch for 4.0 :)
If it wasn't for how easy it was to get started and make things, I'm pretty sure my life would be completely different right now.
Then the beautiful minds of @EllisLab creating @CodeIgniter, then @taylorotwell with @laravelphp.
I owe everything I have to @rasmus' beautiful "shitty" language.
#CodeigniterHistory, #CIHistory: October 2014, EllisLab announced that CodeIgniter would continue development under the stewardship of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (and leadership of Jim Parry)
