Tigray is teetering once again on the edge of a new war, with military buildups, fresh clashes, and a worsening humanitarian catastrophe unfolding as of mid-March. The new issue of @thecontinent_ is covering the events: thecontinent.org/_files/ugd/…. In short: Fighting between Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) and Tigrayan forces (TSF/TDF) erupted on January 26–29, near the Tselemti district along the Tigray-Amhara border. Both sides deployed drones, artillery, and other heavy weapons - drones struck cargo trucks near Enticho on January 30, killing at least one person. Tigrayan forces withdrew from Tselemti on February 1 as "a gesture of readiness" for dialogue. However, as recently as March 4, senior TPLF official Amanuel Assefa told AFP that Ethiopian federal forces were "surrounding Tigray from multiple directions" and that federal authorities were preparing "to wage a war". The crisis has a dangerous regional dimension. Ethiopia formally accused Eritrea of supporting the TPLF and demanded it "immediately withdraw its troops" from Ethiopian territory. The TPLF has denied any current alliance with Asmara, but the Ethiopia–Eritrea relationship — which had been a pillar of the original 2020–22 war — has dramatically deteriorated since October 2025. The TPLF itself is internally divided. A rival faction — the so-called "Tigray Peace Forces" (TPF), reportedly backed by Addis Ababa — has been clashing with the TDF in southern and southeastern Tigray near the Afar border. Deep rifts within the TPLF's military leadership have also surfaced publicly, with one general making damaging internal allegations. Vice President Assefa acknowledged that the party no longer commands the same popular support it once did.

PublicHealthMessage#3: Open Call to Avert Another Genocidal War in Ethiopia I am urgently appealing to U.S. and international leaders to take immediate action to prevent the escalation towards large‑scale conflict in Ethiopia, one that risks evolving into another genocidal war in Tigray and destabilizing the entire Horn of Africa. It’s already began 3 days ago and a drone attack has already been reported in my home state not far from my hometown.  In 2022, under U.S. leadership and with African Union facilitation, the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (COHA) was signed. Since then, the Ethiopian government has repeatedly violated the agreement, including banning the very party that signed it and agreed with. Months ago, I warned of an imminent return to war:  ethiopiainsight.substack.com… This was followed with additional petitions, emails, and public appeals from thousands of Ethiopians and allies. Despite those appeals the hostilities have now resumed. Reports indicate renewed military operations in western Tigray, as well as drone strikes in Enticho killing civilians and destroying what’s becoming rare due to blockade food commodities.  At the same time, Ethiopia is reportedly purchasing fighter jets from Russia and mobilizing irregular militias, further escalating risk to millions. This was in display at the recent anniversary celebration of the regime’s Air Force flanked by AFRICOM commander and Dupty US Secretary of.  As a public health expert, Peace Laureate of APHA, and someone who lost family, colleagues, research infrastructure, and trainees during the 2020–2022 Tigray genocide, I cannot stay silent. Why this matters now Recent images and diplomatic engagements involving U.S. officials with Ethiopian military leaders, some of whom oversee air forces implicated in past mass civilian casualties, have caused deep concern among affected communities. Conflicting messages about U.S. military cooperation have only added confusion. This moment calls for clarity and principled leadership. A critical question must be asked. Is the United States prepared to take swift and decisive diplomatic action to uphold the Pretoria Agreement and prevent a catastrophic return to full scale war? Millions of civilians, across Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, and beyond, remain at extreme risk. Over 20 million are in famine like conditions and 3-5 million of those in Tigray are under life threatening conditions. Only robust enforcement of COHA can prevent further atrocities. I urgently call on the U.S. government and international community to: 1. Demand an immediate cessation of hostilities; 2. Support independent monitoring and verification; 3. Publicly reaffirm and enforce full implementation of the Pretoria/COHA Agreement, including protection of civilians and demilitarization.  The cost of inaction will be enormous, humanitarian, geopolitical, and financial. Our peer‑reviewed research documents the devastating human toll of drone and jet attacks during the previous conflict: link.springer.com/article/10… Failure to act risks another genocide, regional destabilization, and mass displacement. Now is the time to act. I respectfully urge U.S. officials, policy leaders to take possible action to save millions and concerned citizens to review recent developments, contact congressional representatives, and press for immediate, principled engagement. The media that largely ignored the last conflict, often described as the hidden deadliest war, must now show its humanity and recognize the worth of African lives. Remember, this region is home to Lucy, the earliest known hominid fossil, underscoring its significance as one of the cradles of human origin! For reference: Defense report on new aircraft deliveries to Ethiopia: x.com/profmulugeta/status/20… Thank you for your attention at this critical moment. A renewed civil conflict in Northern Ethiopia would be sheer idiocy! The losers would be every Ethiopian-immaterial of ethnicity or ideology- as well as national prosperity and stability. The only winners would be Ethiopia's external and internal enemies. abcnews.go.com/Business/wire…

This is yet another reminder that the genocide against Tigrayan civilians has not stopped. Redae Amare was killed on January 31, 2026, when a drone operated by the Ethiopian regime of @AbiyAhmedAli struck the ISUZU truck he was driving in Enticho. He was from Mezutey in the Hawzien district and was the only son of a mother who had raised him alone after losing his father when he was a child. #TigrayGenocide

#Ethiopia: Interim President says dialogue under #Pretoria Agreement remains possible as #Tigray forces withdraw from Tselemti Tigray advanced forces have withdrawn from #Tselemti in what the Tigray Interim Administration described as a confidence-building measure aimed at demonstrating readiness for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the current tensions, Interim President Lt. General #Tadesse said. “Our withdrawal shows clearly that we have no desire to return to war,” General Tadesse said, adding that “there is no question that can be answered by war, but by peace and negotiation.” Speaking on Saturday to Tigrai Television, he stressed that the situation does not have to escalate into full-scale conflict, emphasizing that dialogue remains both possible and preferable. The Interim President said Tigray’s core demands remain unchanged, centering on the return of internally displaced persons (#IDPs) and the restoration of the region’s constitutional sovereignty. General Tadesse warned that failure to resolve displacement and territorial issues could lead to renewed conflict, but said the Pretoria Agreement continues to offer a viable framework for negotiations. The remarks came amid growing public concern over escalating tensions in Tigray, including reports of recent drone strikes. At least one person was killed and another injured after a drone strike hit two trucks in the Enticho area of the Central Tigray Zone on Friday night, according to local sources.
