🚨Can we de-escalate surgery in early-stage very low-risk cervical cancer? An exploratory analysis from the SHAPE trial suggests simple hysterectomy may achieve similar oncologic outcomes compared with radical hysterectomy in carefully selected patients —> with less surgical morbidity. Are we entering a new era of less radical surgery for cervical cancer? #GynOnc #CervicalCancer #SHAPEtrial #evidencebasedsurgery

📊🧴 Which skin prep is best for SSI prevention? A meta-analysis of 32 RCTs (n = 29,748) shows chlorhexidine is superior to povidone-iodine for reducing overall surgical site infections (RR 0.83). Benefits are most evident in clean-contaminated surgery and superficial SSIs. Evidence matters—especially for everyday perioperative decisions. #SurgicalSiteInfection #InfectionPrevention #PerioperativeCare #EvidenceBasedSurgery #MetaAnalysis frontiersin.org/journals/med…

New in Annals of Surgery: 20-year systematic review meta-analysis comparing robotic vs laparoscopic surgery across 15 abdominal procedures: 211,078 robotic cases 1,358,201 laparoscopic cases 360 studies | 30 countries Key takeaway: Robotic-assisted surgery had significantly lower conversion-to-open rates vs laparoscopy. Since conversion is linked to higher complications, cost, and recovery time, this adds strong evidence in favor of robotics as a safer, more reliable minimally invasive platform. What has your experience been with conversion rates in robotics vs laparoscopy? #RoboticSurgery #Laparoscopy #SystematicReview #MetaAnalysis #AnnalsOfSurgery #EvidenceBasedSurgery #SurgicalInnovation @AmCollSurgeons @oncodaily @ASCRS_1 @AnnalsofSurgery

🔬 New RCT Published! 📢 DRAFT Trial: To Drain or Not to Drain after Thyroidectomy for large goitres In 354 patients with large goitres (>6 cm) — a presentation far more common in LMICs — our trial found no added benefit of routine drains Drains didn’t reduce hematoma/seroma ✅ “No-drain” = safer, less pain, shorter stay Evidence that challenges tradition and improves care in resource-limited settings. 💡🌍 Great work by our young team led admirably by @drskyind 🔗pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4125… #Surgery #Thyroidectomy #RCT #GlobalSurgery #LMIC #EvidenceBasedSurgery #ClinicalTrial

💡 “It’s easy to build something and assume it will be transformative — but proper evidence is the only way to remain honest about whether it truly works.” – Dr. Hani Marcus Ever wonder why new drugs go through rigorous testing… but new surgical innovations don’t follow the same playbook? 🤔 That’s where the IDEAL framework comes in — a structured, evidence-based approach that’s transforming how we evaluate new surgical techniques, robotics, and AI in medicine. As Chair of the IDEAL Collaboration, Dr. @hani_marcus is helping bring clarity and consistency to surgical innovation — ensuring that new technology isn’t just cutting-edge, but proven safe and effective. ✨ From AI-assisted pituitary surgery to the creation of IDEAL Robotics and Decide AI frameworks, his work is helping shape how regulators and innovators approach the future of surgical technology. 👉 Read the full story to learn: • Why surgery needed its own framework for innovation • How IDEAL is evolving to include AI and robotics • What advice Dr. Marcus gives to innovators and clinicians 🔗 tinyurl.com/ytuk25yd #SurgicalInnovation #AIinHealthcare #Robotics #EvidenceBasedSurgery #IDEALFramework

Update: Delighted to share that our trial on perioperative neck-stretching exercises for thyroidectomy patients has been published in the European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. At a time when endocrine surgery is advancing rapidly with robotics, neuromonitoring, and precision devices, this study reminds us that high-impact care doesn’t always need high-cost technology. Sometimes, a simple, evidence-based, low-resource intervention can significantly improve pain, comfort, and quality of life for our patients. This work adds to the growing movement of pragmatic surgical innovation and prehabilitation. Grateful to my co-authors, trainees, and our patients for trusting us in this journey of improving thyroid care. 🙏 🧠 Take-home: Let’s make perioperative neck rehabilitation a routine part of thyroid surgery pathways -scalable, reproducible, and accessible to all. #ThyroidSurgery #EndocrineSurgery #GlobalSurgery #Prehabilitation #RCT #PatientCentricCare #LMICInnovation #ValueBasedCare #SurgeryForAll #EvidenceBasedSurgery @BreastSurgeonGA @Dhananjayasha19 @ijesrofficial @Jasosamd @pihaigh @SocSurgErgo @SurgErgonomics @Ssuhani_surgeon @surgicelll @somusp9 @IASO_IJSOonline @ijesrofficial @TheAAES @AmCollSurgeons @TomVargheseJr @chibaAkiko @SaudiSBES @LATS_Society

Completely agree, Dr. Varghese Jr.! The rigor and dedication of peer-reviewers are the quiet forces that drive scientific progress and keep surgery grounded in objectivity and excellence. I truly appreciate all who devote their time and expertise to strengthening the foundation of evidence-based medicine, and equally appreciative of your outstanding leadership as Editor-in-Chief in guiding and upholding these standards. #PeerReview #JACS #ACS #SurgeryJournals #LeadershipMatters #SurgeryLeadership #EvidenceBasedSurgery #EvidenceBasedMedicine @acsJACS @TomVargheseJr
One of the most amazing experiences as an Editor-in-Chief of a medical journal: 🚩Seeing the incredible work done by numerous peer-reviewers around the globe up close. The scientific method emphasizes logic, evidence-based reasoning, and skepticism, encouraging individuals to question assumptions and seek verifiable information. #Science acknowledges that knowledge is constantly evolving and that existing ideas are open to scrutiny and modification as new evidence emerges. Grateful to all who are devoted to advancing science, and ensuring the best peer-reviewed processes. 🙏🏾 @acsJACS

🎤 Honoured to co-chair, alongside Amjad Parvaiz (UK), a high-level scientific session at the 33rd @EAES_eu - European Association for Endoscopic Surgery Annual Congress in Belgrade — a vibrant forum of surgical innovation and evidence-based discussion. 🧠 A particular highlight was the presentation by Dr. Kengo Hayashi, from the University of Kanazawa (Japan) and recent Visiting Fellow at the University of Turin, who shared the results of a collaborative meta-analysis conducted with the MITIC Lab - Minimally Invasive Therapy and Innovation Center. 📊 The study addressed a pivotal question in colorectal surgery: "Does Complete Mesocolic Excision (CME) improve survival in right colon cancer?" 👉 The key finding: CME improves survival only in Stage III right colon cancer, not in earlier stages — a result that will surely fuel both clinical and academic debate. 👏 Congratulations to Kengo Hayashi and the MITIC Lab - Minimally Invasive Therapy and Innovation Center team for their rigorous work and impactful contribution to surgical oncology. #EAES2025 #ColorectalSurgery #CME #SurgicalInnovation #MITICLab #EvidenceBasedSurgery #RightColonCancer #AcademicSurgery @unito @cittasalute_to @IASSS - International Association of Student Surgical Societies mitic-lab.com Complete mesocolic excision (CME) impacts survival only for Stage III right-sided colon cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis: Minimally Invasive Therapy & Allied Technologies: Vol 33 , No 6 - Get Access @
