📊 NFHS-6, 2023-24 is out, and the findings present a mixed but important picture of India’s nutrition journey. Key Takeaways from NFHS-6 (2023–24) ✅ Child Stunting Declined Significantly •Stunting reduced from 35.5% to 29.3% — a decline of 6.2 percentage points, highlighting encouraging progress in child growth and development. ✅ Severe Wasting Reduced •Severe wasting declined from 7.7% to 5.2%, indicating progress in addressing the most severe forms of acute malnutrition. ✅ Maternal and Child Health Indicators Improved •First trimester ANC registration, four or more ANC visits, institutional deliveries, and immunization coverage all recorded improvements. ✅ Complementary Feeding Practices Improved •Timely introduction of complementary foods among infants aged 6–8 months increased from 45.9% to 59.5%. Areas Requiring Immediate Attention ⚠️ Exclusive Breastfeeding Has Declined •Exclusive breastfeeding among children under six months fell from 63.7% to 55.8%, highlighting the need for stronger counselling and community support for mothers. ⚠️ Wasting Remains Stubbornly High •Despite a decline in severe wasting, overall wasting remains largely unchanged at 19.0%, indicating that acute undernutrition continues to affect nearly one in five children. ⚠️ Many Children Still Miss Out on Adequate Nutrition •Only 15.3% of children aged 6–23 months receive an adequate diet, pointing to a pressing need to improve dietary diversity and complementary feeding practices at scale. ⚠️ Rising burden of malnutrition in adults • While undernutrition remains a concern, overweight/obesity and elevated blood sugar levels are increasing among adults, signalling a growing nutrition and public health challenge. The Way Forward The findings reinforce the need to prioritize: 🔹 Exclusive breastfeeding and optimal infant and young child feeding practices 🔹 Improving diet quality, dietary diversity and increasing access to nutritious foods for young children 🔹 Mission-mode identification and management of SAM/MAM children 🔹 Continued investments in maternal and child health services 🔹 Addressing the double burden of malnutrition through healthier diets, active lifestyles, and prevention of diet-related NCDs NFHS-6 provides an important opportunity to recalibrate programmes and accelerate progress towards a healthier and better-nourished India. 🇮🇳 #NFHS6 #Nutrition #Poshan #PublicHealth #MaternalHealth #ChildNutrition #India #EvidenceToPolicy #HealthSystems #NutritionForAll #AnuvaadSolutions

This week, the Weather Events and Mental Health in Africa (WEMA) Project is hosting a Consortium Meeting in Naivasha, Kenya. Partners from the African Population and Health Research Center (@aphrc ), Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), South Africa, Centre de Recherche en Sante de Nouna (CRSN), Burkina Faso, and Comite para a Saude, Mozambique will review progress on research into the mental health impacts of floods, droughts, and heatwaves. As climate extremes intensify, understanding their impact on mental health becomes increasingly urgent. Prof. Collins Iwuji (WEMA PI, AHRI) emphasized the importance of Africa-led collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and translating evidence into action through engagement with communities and policymakers. APHRC’s @agnes_kiragga highlighted ongoing work in Climate and Mental Health Research at the Center and the urgent need to address the intersection of climate change and mental health in Africa. @Wekesah presented findings from the completed systematic review, which noted strong links between extreme weather events and mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly among vulnerable groups. Country teams presented their latest findings, sharing progress and emerging evidence from research conducted in their study sites. #WEMAProject #ClimateAndHealth #MentalHealth #GlobalHealth #EvidenceToPolicy @amveyange @CKyobutungi @DMdiarafa @RatemoJuliet @williamsila @MangwanaVJ @deborahndlovu @ndonyesarah @DorcasOdhiambo @Chris_Maero @dia_diama @ChristineGer22 @MangwanaVJ @Hope_shete @MuliDavis @DKadengye

During the Ouagadougou Partnership Annual Meeting 2025 in Lomé, #IamAPHRC’s Countdown to 2030 initiative co-organized a high-level side session focused on a critical yet under-addressed issue: contraceptive discontinuation and its implications for sustainable family planning financing in West and Central Africa. The three key takeaways from the discussion are: ✅ Contraceptive discontinuation undermines the efficiency of investments in family planning; ✅ It is closely linked to women’s empowerment, quality of care, and the broader sociopolitical environment; ✅ Integrating discontinuation into key indicators, policies, and financing strategies is essential, particularly in a context of declining external funding. This session reaffirmed APHRC’s and Countdown to 2030’s commitment to placing evidence at the center of policy decisions, domestic financing, and actionable reforms from 2026 onward. #RAPO2025 #IamAPHRC #Countdown2030 #FamilyPlanning #SRHR #HealthFinancing #EvidenceToPolicy @Countdown2030 @GatesFoundation @theGFF @PMNCH @equity_iceh @CKyobutungi @amveyange @RatemoJuliet @DMdiarafa @deborahndlovu @williamsila @deekagwii @dia_diama @DorcasOdhiambo
