I'm old enough to remember filing my tax returns on the telephone. It was some IRS program in the late 90s where you could call a number and enter the info.
@taxgirl do you remember that? Maybe it was the precursor to FreeFile?

This is such a good example of why implementing government programs quickly and loudly matters.
IRS Freefile rocked, but it took a long time to implement, only launched in a few states at first, and wasn’t promoted heavily enough. It’s harder to rollback something popular!

Vivo estas situaciones con mis hijos a diario, donde vamos ellos llevan juguetes (autos, bloques) y veo como los miran raro y los excluyen incluso, niños que están con el celular todo el dia. Los tratan de "raros" porque no saben que carajo es "tralalero, freefile, roblox, etc"
Duele aceptar que esto ya pasa en el mundo real. Para quienes crecimos jugando con juguetes, es triste ver que algo tan sano está desapareciendo y que a los niños que aún lo hacen los tachen de “raros”. Ojalá Toy Story 5 le recuerde a muchos lo valioso que es simplemente jugar.

op was talking about DirectFile, which operated entirely on the IRS website. That is no longer available starting this year. Not to be confused with FreeFile, which sends you to an external site.

It does seem odd to me that gov doesn't provide free resources to do a thing that if you neglect doing it they will throw you in prison, yes. IRS freefile is so glitchy as to be unusable and Direct File is limited eligibility. The commercial websites don't even work that well

Freefile still exists and existed long before Biden. The IRS doesnt need multiple free filing methods, just one that works.

It means that they stripped away the IRS FreeFile system so their buddies at Intuit can force people into giving them their tax refunds or force people who owe to pay more into the economy by using TurboTax since they won’t have a refund to spend elsewhere.

The House version was bad. The Senate version stripped out all the good stuff. And added even more pork. Land sales? IRS FreeFile canceled so we have to pay TurboTax? And you lied about the 2A part, deregistration WAS stripped out, they just lowered the price to register. 🙄
