⚽️ 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 One of the biggest challenges I see in football is that many game models become overly prescriptive, fixed and don't account for the complexity and unpredictable and dynamic nature of soccer. Some coaches prefer to have an 'idealistic' and romanticised version of how they want teams to play, irrespective of the players abilities. They focus on patterns over principles and may tell players where to stand, what movements and positions to make, and what solutions to execute......But football is not played in stable environments. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜, 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲. That is why I have increasingly moved towards viewing the Game Model as an adaptable, affordance-based framework rather than a collection of fixed patterns or predetermined behaviours. As discussed in our recent paper (Jones et al., 2026), the purpose of a Game Model should not be to provide players with answers. Its purpose should be to shape attention towards the opportunities for action that emerge within and between moments of the game. It's why an infinity loop rather than traditional phase-based diagram was chosen. Football doesn't stop. The game is a continuous flow of perception, action, adaptation and reorganisation. Players do not experience football as separate attacking, defending and transition phases. They experience a constantly evolving landscape of opportunities, threats and emerging possibilities. The infinity loop represents this continuous movement between: 🟢 Building Up & Scoring 🔴 Disturbing Build-Up & Regaining 🟡 Transition 🔵 Restarts & Set-pieces Rather than viewing these as isolated moments, the model recognises that every action influences what comes next. A pass shapes the next affordance. A regain creates a new opportunity. A transition changes the picture. A restart establishes the next intention. At the centre sits the Transition Nexus, representing the continual recalibration of attention as players adapt to changing information and circumstances. The goal is not to create players who follow fixed patterns. The goal is to develop players who can perceive opportunities, adapt their behaviour, coordinate with teammates and respond effectively to the ever-changing demands of the game. The infinity loop reflects what football really is: A continuous flow of interconnected moments rather than a sequence of isolated phases. This idea is explored further in our recent Game Model paper (Jones et al., 2026), where we propose moving beyond prescriptive frameworks towards adaptable, affordance-based models that support intelligent and adaptive performance. #GameModel #Football #EcologicalDynamics #SkillAcquisition #Coaching #PlayerDevelopment #Methodology #Performance #UEFA #SoccerCoaching

⚽️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮? I was recently asked during a meeting with a club: "How would you describe your game idea? How do you want teams you coach to play?" My answer wasn't about formations, systems, or even shapes...It's about creating players and teams that can solve problems. I want players who can 𝑶𝒖𝒕-𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌, 𝑶𝒖𝒕-𝑭𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝑶𝒖𝒕-𝑹𝒖𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑶𝒖𝒕-𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒚 and ultimately 𝑶𝒖𝒕-𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔. Players who have the freedom to make decisions, adapt to changing circumstances, and be unpredictable. In possession, I want a dynamic and exciting style of football built around: • Rotations and positional flexibility • Strong connections and combinations • Collective intelligence and responsibility • Disguise and deception to break lines • Playing forward whenever opportunities emerge • Creating uncertainty for opponents I want players constantly searching, anticipating, and acting on what is about to happen, "Playing in the Future" rather than simply reacting to what has already happened. Out of possession, I want teams that are compact, connected, aggressive, and difficult to play against. Teams that fight for every moment, protect important spaces, and work collectively to regain possession. Above all, I want players to be brave. Brave enough to take risks. Brave enough to solve problems. Brave enough to innovate. Brave enough to create. Because football is a game of constantly changing circumstances, and the best players are those who can adapt and respond with solutions. One Identity. One Purpose. One Standard. Together. #Football #Coaching #Leadership #GameModel #Methodology #PlayerDevelopment #SkillAcquisition #EcologicalDynamics #HighPerformance #UEFA #SoccerCoaching

After watching the first half of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League Final between PSG and Arsenal, I believe Luis Enrique could have benefited from switching to a 3-1-6 structure by introducing Barcola in place of Fabián Ruiz. This adjustment would have provided PSG with greater attacking presence in the final third, with Barcola and Doué operating in the half-spaces to create central superiority. By increasing both width and depth while maintaining constant off-ball movement, PSG could have generated dynamic and numerical overloads between the lines, making it more difficult for Arsenal to maintain their defensive organization. That said, Arsenal also delivered an excellent first half from a tactical perspective. Mikel Arteta’s side defended in a compact 4-2-4 mid-block that frequently transformed into a 6-4 low block when required. This structure allowed Arsenal to effectively close both the width and the depth of the pitch, limiting PSG’s access to central zones and forcing play into less dangerous areas. Their aggression in duels, compactness between the lines, spatial control, tactical discipline, and collective defensive organization made them extremely difficult to break down. 🔍 Questions for the audience: • Would you have switched PSG to a 3-1-6 structure earlier in the game? • Was Arsenal’s defensive organization the key factor in the first half? • Would Barcola’s profile have created more problems for Arsenal’s block? • Which coach won the tactical battle in the opening 45 minutes: Luis Enrique or Mikel Arteta? #UCLFinal #ChampionsLeagueFinal #PSG #Arsenal #PSGvArsenal #LuisEnrique #MikelArteta #TacticalAnalysis #FootballTactics #PositionalPlay #EliteScout #GameModel #TacticalPeriodization #FootballAnalysis

🚨 𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑮𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍 - new publication ⚽️ 𝑮𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒃𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈: 𝑨𝒏 𝑬𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑫𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 From rigid playbooks and prescribed patterns ➡️ to adaptive, principle-based frameworks shaped through player-environment interactions. Excited to share our latest paper has now been published in the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 as part of the special issue: Applied Football Science in Coaching and Performance. The paper explores how Game Models in football can be reconceptualised through an ecological dynamics perspective, moving beyond rigid systems and prescriptive structures toward adaptable frameworks that support perception, decision-making, problem-solving, and player-environment interaction. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to the discussions, challenges, and ideas that have shaped this work, and what this could mean for future research in: • Coach Education • Practice Design • Methodology Departments • Feedback & Coach Behaviour • Talent Development • Performance Analysis • Game Models This paper positions its contribution as a conceptual framework intended to guide future research and applied practice. What may be most original within this paper is the attempt to reconceptualise Game Models in football, not as a deterministic blueprint of pre-planned patterns and prescribed solutions, but as a flexible scaffold that supports adaptive player and team behaviours within the evolving constraints of competition. The paper also introduces the idea of: • 𝑻𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒔 that guide perception and action within game-specific situations. • The Transition Nexus, where moments of transition become attentional recalibration points requiring adaptation, reorganisation, and co-ordination. • Coach feedback as player challenges, where questions, prompts, and informational guidance are used to shape players’ visual search and affordance perception without prescribing ready-made answers. From this perspective, Game Models become tools for designing representative learning environments that support perception-action coupling, player autonomy, adaptability, and co-adaptive team behaviours. 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 Having spent six months, every day coaching to win football matches and develop players, in a high intensity, performance environment…and then spending a similar amount of time out of it…I’ve had space to think and reflect. • To study the game. • To analyse the highest levels. • To reflect, challenge, and research. And this is what I’ve come up with. A model that captures how I want teams to attack with intention to win. 𝑨𝑻𝑻𝑨𝑪𝑲𝑰𝑵𝑮 𝑰𝑵𝑻𝑬𝑵𝑻𝑰𝑶𝑵𝑺 Where problems emerge. Where players solve them. The game is not about patterns. It’s about 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 within constantly changing constraints. So instead of scripting actions…we design environments that shape behaviour. Football is about gaining an edge. Manipulating & exploiting space through purposeful disruption. We want to help teams "Create uncertainty in the box" where defenders don't know what to expect, as this creates chaos and opportunities to pass, run and finish with disguise & surprise If you’re serious about: • Developing intelligent players and problem solvers • Coaching within the reality of the game • Moving beyond drills and patterns Then this is the direction. Want to go deeper into how to actually coach this? Reply “Coach” and I’ll send you a discounted link to CoachesClubhouse, where I break down these ideas into session design, practice examples, and real application. #Coaching #highperformance #soccer #CPD #GameModel #GameIntentions #AttackingIntentions #Principles #Football #Soccer #UEFA #CoachEducation #CoachDevelopment #Learning

High-performance environments don’t happen by chance. They are built through: • Clear leadership • Aligned methodology • Integrated departments Across 20 years in football, one thing is consistent: • Clarity drives behaviour. • Behaviour drives performance. From grassroots to elite youth academy to professional first team levels, across multiple countries, my focus has always been the same: Build environments that develop players, align staff, and deliver results. Incredible journey, implementing best practice, driving standards, elevating coaching and researching and contributing to the game with PGCE, MSc, MSD and now PhD research alongside holding senior leadership positions in UK, US, Morocco and Cambodia. In high-performance environments, culture isn’t what you say. It’s what your players, you and staff experience and live by, and model every day. This is what sustainable success looks like. #Leadership #Football #HighPerformance #GameModel #SportsDirector #UEFA #Soccer

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬 This is how I see coaching. Not drills. Not patterns. Not repetition for the sake of it. I design environments where players: • Have to think • Have to adapt • Have to solve real problems under pressure Because the game isn’t rehearsed… so why should training be? The game is unpredictable, dynamic and forever changing...therefore we need to design environments that embrace chaos, are representative of the game and provide players with information which they can search for and discover their own solutions My 4C approach is built on : • CHOICES - players have decisions to make, problems to solve • COMPETITION - game is competitive, duels, methods of scoring, points/goals • CHALLENGE - individual or team tasks that are personalised experiences • CLARITY - connection to the 'why', how it relates to their needs Clarity drives behaviour. Behaviour drives performance. Everything I do is grounded in: • Game-like, representative design • Constraints-led approach that shape decisions, not dictate actions • Feedback that guides attention, not gives answers This is about developing intelligent, adaptable footballers who can perform in real game moments. If you want to see how this looks in practice, I’ve shared real session examples across different levels, including professional environments at international level and club level: 👉 gerardschooloffootball.com/c… #UEFACoaching #CoachingMethodology #GerardJones #UEFAALicence #FAAdvancedYouthAward #CLA #EcologicalDynamics #HighPerformance #Representativedesign #UEFA #GameModel #Football #Soccer #Academy

Barca fans are obsessed with an offensive gamemodel that let the 🐐 of the sport only win 3 CLs in his long career. I hope squad building takes precedence over individual platforming.

Roberto De Zerbi’s build up against Sunderland. The front line stretched the pitch with three players positioned high and wide, forming an aggressive attacking line that pinned the opposition and created depth. In the first phase of buildup, the centre backs split either side of the goalkeeper. Centrally, the structure evolved into a staggered box midfield. Gray and Gallagher operated at the base as dual pivots. Ahead of them, Udogie stepped out of the full back area to occupy a higher position between the lines, with Bergvall mirroring this on the opposite side. There were positive early signs and some promising moments in possession for Tottenham. However, beyond that initial phase, the performance lacked the intensity required at the level. The fight, aggression, and competitive edge was simply not there. Call it hunger, call it mentality, it's lacking!. Structure gives you a platform. Mentality determines the outcome. We will have a full Tactical Camera view available on our website member area shortly for coaches who want to study the details of what De Zerbi is trying to build. #RobertoDeZerbi #SoccerCoaches #FootballCoaching #TacticalAnalysis #BuildUpPlay #PositionalPlay #CoachingEducation #FootballTactics #GameModel #CoachDevelopment

Stormers TV post match video, completely different content than normal. No joy. Just the tries, showed even the Dragons tries. No celebrations. No singing. No pep talks in the dressingroom. They were humbled while winning. All good. We move on. I know the Coaches have all the stats we see and way more internal stats that is important and relevant to them and the gamemodel. Repeat mistakes are frustrating, for them and for us, the latter been removed from that environment. I know we are nr 2 on the log and that is no luck in the URC especially with such a crowded log, nr 3 and nr 7 has 6 log points between them. However we, supporters players coaches demand more. It is good signs.

Tactical Conditioned Game (10v8) ⚽🧠 Designing Game problems. Players looking to regain high against opposition build-up, and in doing so, find ways to play forward, combine to finish outside penalty area from assist locations 🎯 Objective Train pressing triggers, overload creation, and structured attacking entries within tactical constraints. 🔒 Rules • High press on goal-kick based on opposition build structure • On regain: connect centrally before accessing wide areas • Defensive team must defend outnumbered in opposition's shape • Attacking team must create entries from wide areas, central spaces half-spaces 🧩 Challenges 🔴 Bibs (Out of Possession) • Defend 3 of 5 lanes when ball central • Defend 4 of 5 lanes when ball wide 🔵 Non-Bibs (In Possession) • Occupy all 5 vertical lanes 🏆 Scoring System • Early finish from playing off front players = 3 goals • High & wide cross (originating from half-space) = 2 goals • Any other goal = 1 goal If opposition score in any counter goal, deducts 1 goal from tally Every 2mins defending team goes without conceding, adds 1 goal Reward the behaviour you want repeated. 🔍 Why This Works Constraints shape behaviour. Players solve spatial-temporal problems. Structure meets freedom. 4-C Approach Link: youtu.be/FhV92YAQyAc #ConstraintsLed #EcologicalDynamics #GameModel #HighPerformanceLoop #TransitionalInformation #Coaching #highperformancecoaching #Elite #UEFAA
