Day 14:
Kente: A Cloth of History, Identity and Pride. How can we feature special things about Ghana and leave out Kente? Few textiles in the world carry the cultural weight of Kente.
Originating in Ghana, Kente is traditionally woven on narrow looms and assembled into vibrant cloths whose colours and patterns convey proverbs, history and values.
Two major traditions shape this remarkable textile:
Ashanti (Asante) Kente
Woven mainly in towns such as Bonwire and Adanwomase, Ashanti Kente is historically associated with royalty and ceremonial authority. The bold colours and patterns often communicate themes of leadership, unity, wealth and dignity.
Ewe Kente
Woven in the Volta Region, Ewe Kente is renowned for its intricate geometric designs and storytelling motifs. Ewe weavers often incorporate complex patterns that reflect proverbs, historical events and everyday life.
For generations, Kente has been worn at moments of celebration, leadership and cultural identity.
Today, Ghana has taken an important step to protect this heritage by registering Kente as a Geographical Indication (GI)—recognising it as a product whose authenticity and cultural origin are uniquely Ghanaian. Fun fact- my beloved roomie and sister Loretta Asiedu worked tirelessly through
@wipo to make this happen. ❤️
Kente is not just cloth.
It is history, philosophy and craftsmanship woven together.
