Tell me this is not true?
@IMFNews refuses to let taxes drop on essential women's hygiene, child health and family planning staples? Despite assurances from government at
#population council mtgs with runaway population growth rates, we are being told this is not possible??
@FBRSpokesperson pl find other ways to meet your tax targets of Rs 13.9 trillion. The
@GovtofPakistan needs to also rethink such
#regressivetaxation as the fastest way to fill the revenue hole. Because these taxes are affordable for the rich while disproportionately prohibitive for the poor ( 42 % are under the poverty line ) This includes formula
#milk for infants. Such taxes substantially constrain the already limited choices of the poor that are increasingly in need of healthcare, nutrition, birth spacing &
#incomesupport in a
#climatehotspot like Pakistan, whose lived reality is a hardscrabble subsistence that is invisible to decision makers in offices with safe drinking water and full plates.
In Pakistan every 2 hours a woman loses her life due to poor
#maternalhealth or pregnancy complications or inability to space births. She has little access to contraception choices. Children under 5 years of age are stunted at 40% due to
#malnutrition. A country that loses 2.2 % of GDP to climate stress and 5-8 % every time there is catastrophic flooding amid surging global warming needs cross-sectoral development support for child malnutrition, social investments and widespread
#diseaseprevention.
Not supply side economics of the 1980s.
Pakistan surely needs reform, but so do
@BrettonWoodsCom institutions.
