What a time! What a conversation! What a challenge ahead! In Kampala 🇺🇬, @IWMI_ & @IITA_CGIAR convened partners from across Eastern & Southern Africa for a 1.5-day workshop under @CGIARScaling #Learning4Impact. We began aiming for a framework on scaling champions, but partners reminded us: start with a practical guideline that can be tested & refined. Together, we co-developed a regional guideline on identifying & supporting scaling champions. We asked: ❓ Why does adoption remain weak? ❓ Why do innovations lose clarity before reaching farmers? 💡 The answer: scaling succeeds when we elevate champions; people & institutions who communicate science, build trust, connect systems & embed inclusion. We even played Broken Telephone to show how innovation messages get diluted through systems & politics. By the end, clarity was gone, just like what happens to many innovations. 4 takeaways from Kampala: 1️⃣ Scaling must be taught; universities/TVET must prepare graduates to embed adoption. 2️⃣ Think value chains, not pilots. 3️⃣ Confront weak adoption: risks, incentives, inclusion. 4️⃣ Elevate & connect champions. Scaling rarely fails because innovations are weak. It fails when champions lack support.
