So why the confusion? Because visibility ≠ structure. NARD is often more visible during crises.
NMA is often working behind the scenes, quietly shaping outcomes. Both are necessary.
Let’s be clear: You cannot strengthen NARD by weakening NMA.
You cannot protect Resident Doctors by attacking the parent body. That is counterproductive.
Today’s Resident Doctor is tomorrow’s Consultant. And guess what? 👉 𝐍𝐌𝐀 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫.
This is not about hierarchy.
It is about structure, continuity, and unity. A house divided cannot negotiate effectively.

Constructive criticism? Yes.
Engagement? Absolutely.
Disrespect and division? Never. We must disagree with dignity and understanding of structure. On a final note: NARD is not separate from NMA.
NARD is NMA in motion through Resident Doctors. Stronger together. Always. #OneProfession #NMA #NARD #DoctorsUnite

But here’s the truth we must not ignore: 👉 Advocacy is strongest when it is unified
👉 Negotiation is most effective when it is centralised That is where NMA comes in.
When NARD goes on strike, who engages government at the highest level? 👉 NMA When agreements are to be institutionalised across ALL doctors? 👉 NMA When the profession must speak with ONE voice? 👉 NMA
Even recently, during industrial actions, the NMA has consistently: ✔️ Supported NARD’s demands
✔️ Engaged government stakeholders
✔️ Worked toward resolution Because the concerns of any Doctor in Nigeria are our concerns. ICYMI Read: punchng.com/nma-backs-reside… #OneProfession #DoctorsUnite

In simple terms: ➡️ NMA = The Family
➡️ NARD = a member of that Family Why then does NARD appear to be such a quite strong voice in the family? First, many Doctors upon graduating proceed to the residency programme giving NARD membership such a large and significant size-perhaps the largest affiliate of the NMA. In addition, the status of most residents being younger further energises the vigour of the association. Add any other quality you know are prevalent among younger people and you’d have more reasons. This pattern is historical, this has been the case and remember, the Consultant of today was once a Resident. Moreover, Resident Doctors form a strategic stratum of clinical practice thereby making their absence significantly felt in most teaching hospitals-a tool that has been strategically used over the years during negotiations for Doctors’ welfare-generally and specifically. #OneProfession #DoctorsUnite

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors @nard_nigeria is an affiliate of the NMA. That means:
👉 It exists within the NMA structure
👉 It represents a specific cadre-Resident Doctors who upon completion of their residency programme transition to other relevant affiliates of the association such as the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria @mdcan_ng. Other affiliates of the association? ⚕️Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) ⚕️Nigerian Dental Association (NDA) ⚕️National Association of Doctors in University Health Services (NADUHS) ⚕️Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners (ANPMP) ⚕️National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) ⚕️Medical and Dental Specialists in Basic Medical Sciences (MeDSABAMS) Most Doctors in Nigeria belong to one or more of these affiliates while some others whose status doesn’t necessarily fit into any of these are still statutorily members of NMA. In fact, an affiliate group such as NARD is a creation of the NMA Constitution, meaning: 👉 NARD derives legitimacy from NMA
👉 Its actions exist within the broader NMA framework. Interestingly too, leadership of the NMA at different levels are drawn from these constituent affiliates at one point or the other. #OneProfession #DoctorsUnite

There’s been a growing narrative that pitches the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) as opposing forces. This is not only incorrect—it is harmful to our collective strength. Let’s clarify. 👇🏾 A thread 🧵
The Nigerian Medical Association is the umbrella body for ALL doctors in Nigeria. Every licensed doctor namely House Officer, Resident, Consultant whether in public or private practice is a member. It is the peak professional association representing the interests of the entire profession in Nigeria. This has been the case since 1960 when it transformed from the British Medical Association Read more here: thenma.ng/about/history/ #OneProfession #DoctorsUnite

I had the opportunity to visit the Ondo State Ministry of Justice, where I was graciously received by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Ondo State, Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, OON. Our interaction provided a moment for thoughtful exchange within the legal community, a reminder of the importance of dialogue and shared responsibility in strengthening the profession. I am particularly grateful to the Honourable Attorney General for his kind reception and for hosting an evening of fellowship that brought members of the Bar together in an atmosphere of warmth, respect, and collegiality. Grateful for the engagement. 🎥 Highlights from the visit and reception. #ProjectBar #Aarenation #OneProfession #AareOlumuyiwaAkinboroSAN

I had the privilege of engaging with members of the NBA Owo Branch in a consultative session centered on the profession and its evolving realities. The visit also extended to a courtesy call on His Imperial Majesty, Alayeluwa, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, the 32nd Paramount Ruler of the Owo Kingdom. His Royal Majesty, a distinguished member of the legal profession, received me with warmth, royal blessings, goodwill, and words of encouragement. Moments like this continue to reflect the enduring connection between law, leadership, and tradition. Grateful for the engagement. 🎥 Highlights from the visit. #ProjectBar #Aarenation #OneProfession #AareOlumuyiwaAkinboroSAN
