Then he ran out of it. > He kept selling it anyway. Dozens of customers paid for the same machine simultaneously without knowing. > When buyers complained they could not access their miners, he told them it was more profitable to let his data centres run them remotely. > Then he sold cloud mining contracts called Hashlets. > Buyers paid for guaranteed daily Bitcoin payouts from mining power that did not exist. > Over 10,000 investors bought Hashlets, generating $19 MILLION in revenue in just four months. > When the math caught up, he launched his own coin called Paycoin and promised in writing it would never fall below $20 per coin. > To make it look legitimate he built a separate payment platform called PayBase designed to look like an established financial institution. > He told investors Amazon and Target had signed deals to accept Paycoin. > Telling them his companies held a $100 MILLION reserve to support the coin’s price. None of it existed. > Paycoin launched at $15.92. It never hit $20. Within weeks it was trading below $2. > The SEC and DOJ opened investigations simultaneously. Garza pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2017. > He was sentenced to 21 months. He claimed he had no money for restitution. He served the time. > The $9.18 MILLION in restitution has barely been recovered. Each fraud only existed to cover the last. Hardware needed Hashlets. Hashlets needed Paycoin. Paycoin needed Amazon. Pull one layer and the rest fall.

Neither Coinpal nor Paybase sound good to me. Probably to get the Paypal USD online, and have coinbase serve as backend.

PayCoin was the first crypto scam I followed regularly on the BitcoinTalkForum, beginning in late 2014. Days after it was “going Public” I attended TNABC Miami, my first #bitcoin conference, where I was salivating at the prospect of GAW (“Geniuses At Work”) CEO Josh H. Garza debating Litecoin Association Director Andrew Vegetabile about what was happening, in real-time, with (“Homero’s”) coin project-turned-Ponzi and its promised (but failing) “$20.00 minimum floor price” on the Exchanges! MORE: bitcointalk.org/index.php?to… Homero actually showed up blinging for the pre-party, mingling with guests at the famous Clevelander Hotel, amidst video screens playing endlessly looped, professionally produced commercials for PayCoin. His PayBase logo was simultaneously projected above the lively lit pool against the hotel’s vibrantly illuminated, art-deco structure as debaucherous Libertarian revelers danced amidst scantily clad models …and all the early #bitcoin “celebs.” Meanwhile, PayCoin price continued falling like a knife, on through the next morning, and Josh Garza was neither seen nor heard from over the coming days and week[s(IIRC)?]. What a classic freaking memory!!!
