Over the weekend, the Southern Africa Research and Administration Hub (SARAH) was honoured to host IITA Board Member, Dr. Victoria Kwakwa for a familiarization visit to the Hub’s facilities. Dr. Kwakwa was guided through key areas of work including the Cassava Single Node Innovation, the Soybean Speed Breeding Facility, and the cassava value addition section by the youth-led Agripreneurs initiative. During the visit, Dr. Kwakwa commended IITA’s contribution to advancing agricultural transformation across Africa and emphasized the importance of research, innovation, and commercialization in building resilient food systems. Reflecting on global and regional challenges including climate shocks and disruptions to food supply chains, she underscored the critical role institutions such as IITA play in enabling Africa to strengthen food security, drive agricultural commercialization, and reduce reliance on external systems. We are honored to welcome Prof. Gordon Mathews as a keynote speaker at the 2nd UoK Annual Research Conference Professor Mathews is an Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and currently serves as the Deputy Chair of the World Council of Anthropological Associations. He is internationally recognized for his influential scholarship on globalization, identity, migration, culture, belonging, and everyday life across societies. Over the course of his academic career, he has authored and co-authored several important works, including What Makes Life Worth Living?, Global Culture/Individual Identity, Ghetto at the Center of the World, The World in Guangzhou, and Life After Death Today in the United States, Japan, and China. His research has explored how ordinary people navigate globalization, cultural change, inequality, and social transformation in rapidly changing societies. Keynote Presentation “The Idea of SDGs: Cultural Relativism and Global North Imperialism” In this keynote, Professor Mathews will critically examine the global discourse surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The presentation will explore important questions about whose values and priorities shape international development agendas, and whether universal development frameworks adequately reflect the cultural realities and lived experiences of societies outside the Global North. Drawing from anthropology and global cultural studies, the talk will discuss the tension between universal development ideals and cultural relativism, while also reflecting on how power, knowledge, and historical inequalities influence global development narratives. We are honored to have Dr Nuur Hassan as a Keynote Speaker at the 2nd UoK Annual Research Conference. Dr Hassan is a senior academic, author, diaspora thinker, and AI ethics researcher. He currently serves as Head of Curriculum at North Kent College, London, UK. With extensive experience in education, curriculum leadership, digital learning, and academic development, his work explores the relationship between technology, knowledge, identity, and society. His interests include artificial intelligence in education, ethical innovation, diaspora knowledge, and the future of universities in the Global South. His keynote speech will connect closely with this year’s conference theme: “Sustainable Futures: Integrating Science, Technology and Society for Development.” The presentation will explore how artificial intelligence can support teaching, learning, research, translation, academic writing, and access to knowledge, particularly for universities in Ethiopia and across the Global South. At the same time, it will raise important questions surrounding academic integrity, student overdependence on AI, ownership of AI-generated knowledge, and the growing concern of replacing critical thinking with machine-produced answers.
