A Kurdish mother’s voice should never be ignored. In a deeply distressing video, the mother of Nadiya pleads for help after her minor daughter was taken and forcibly recruited by (جوانن شورشكر / Ciwanen Şoreşger, a group operating within areas under Syrian Democratic Forces control and widely reported to be affiliated with PKK-linked structures without parental consent. Her words are clear and chilling: “We were subjected to beatings when we tried to bring our daughter back.” This is not an isolated allegation it reflects a pattern that raises serious questions about accountability, human rights and the future of Kurdish society. After years of conflict and immense Kurdish sacrifice, and amid shifting political alliances in Syria, one urgent question remains: Why are Kurdish minors still being forcibly recruited? No cause justifies the removal of children from their families. No authority should silence a mother’s plea. A nation cannot be protected by weakening its own families. #KurdishLivesMatter #StopChildRecruitment #HumanRights #ProtectKurdishChildren #RojavaKurdistan

Our family woke up this morning to devastating news. 💔 My nephew, a Swedish–Syrian citizen, who disappeared months ago while visiting relatives in Qamishlo, Rojava Kurdistan/northeastern Syria, has been confirmed dead. Throughout these months, his mother and father lived in indescribable anxiety, searching desperately for any information about his whereabouts. 🖤 Today, the family was informed that they could collect his body, which reportedly bears marks that raise serious concerns and require an immediate and transparent investigation. 🕊️ As his aunt, the pain we feel is beyond words. And as a Kurdish journalist who has long defended the dignity and rights of my people, staying silent in the face of such a tragedy is not an option. My heart goes out to his parents and family in this unimaginable grief. I call for an independent and transparent investigation to uncover the full truth and ensure accountability for those responsible, while safeguarding the dignity of the victim. 🙏 Human dignity and justice must remain values that cannot be compromised, regardless of the circumstances. What has happened calls on the international community and human rights organisations to support the family and protect the future of all victims. 🖤 #Justice #HumanRights #Accountability #RojavaKurdistan #Qamishlo #InternationalJustice #HumanRightsDefenders #PressFreedom #sweden @amnesty @hrw @Europarl_EN @bbcworldservice Remembering Alaa as he was in life🖤

Last Tuesday I had the opportunity to take part in a roundtable discussion at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on the situation in North-East Syria (Rojava Kurdistan), with UK Minister for the Middle East Hamish Falconer and the UK’s Syria Representative Ann Snow. As a Kurdish-British citizen originally from Rojava Kurdistan, I felt a responsibility to convey the concerns and aspirations of communities on the ground. Our discussion focused on several urgent issues, including the implementation of the 30 January agreement, the need to lift restrictions around Kobane, the protection of civilians, safeguarding the hard-won rights of women and ensuring that any future Syrian political settlement includes meaningful decentralisation and constitutional recognition of Kurdish rights within a united Syria. I also emphasised that stability in North-East Syria is closely linked to preventing the re-emergence of extremism. The Kurdish people have played a decisive role in the defeat of ISIS and in protecting many of Syria’s minorities. Their voice must be part of shaping the country’s future. The meeting was constructive and thoughtful. The Minister expressed appreciation for the Kurdish community in the UK and its positive contribution and acknowledged the resilience of the Kurdish people during Syria’s long conflict. These conversations matter. For many of us, they are not simply policy discussions but a way of ensuring that the voices, concerns and hopes of people in Rojava continue to be heard in international forums. #RojavaKurdistan #NorthEastSyria #Kurds #Syria #HumanRights #WomenRights #Kobane #UKForeignPolicy #Diplomacy #MiddleEast @HFalconerMP @UKSyriaRep @FCDOGovUK

I am honoured to have been invited to speak at an international conference hosted by the @institutkurde at the historic Palais du Luxembourg, home of the Sénat français. At a critical moment for the Middle East amid profound political shifts and uncertainty the conference, titled “The Kurds in Turmoil: Rojava – Rojhelat in the Face of Geopolitical Upheavals,” brings renewed urgency to the Kurdish question in both North-East Syria and Iranian Kurdistan. As regional dynamics rapidly evolve, the position, security, and political future of Kurds in Rojava and Rojhelat have become more essential than ever to the broader stability of the region. I will be joining prominent Kurdish political figures, including Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of External Relations of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria; Rohelat Afrin, Commander of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ); and Safeen Dizayee, Minister of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Regional Government. This gathering will address not only the challenges facing Rojava and Rojhelat, but also the responsibility of France and Europe in supporting stability, democratic governance, security and the protection of rights at a time when regional balances are being reshaped. Speaking at the French Parliament on Rojava Kurdistan in this pivotal period is both a responsibility and a strategic opportunity to ensure that Kurdish realities and aspirations are clearly heard at the heart of European political debate. #RojavaKurdistan #Rojhelat #KurdishIssue #FrenchSenate #Paris #Geopolitics #KurdishVoices #Europe #MiddleEast

Latest Update on Humanitarian Assistance to Rojava Kurdistan In response to the ongoing humanitarian needs in Rojava Kurdistan, the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) continues its relief operations with the aim of supporting displaced families and vulnerable communities. Guided by its humanitarian mission and in coordination with local partners, BCF has delivered extensive assistance across the region. According to the latest update, BCF has successfully delivered 321 trucks full of food and non-food items to Rojava Kurdistan. These goods have reached a wide segment of the population and provided essential support to families affected by conflict and displacement. As part of its food security response, BCF distributed 59,375 food packages, ensuring access to basic nutrition for thousands of households. In addition, 8,908 families directly benefited from various humanitarian assistance programs implemented by the foundation. Fuel support has also been a key component of the response. A total of 325,582 liters of fuel were delivered to assist families during difficult living conditions, particularly in areas facing harsh weather and limited resources. On the healthcare front, BCF supplied 5,582 medical kits to health facilities and medical teams, contributing to improved access to essential healthcare services and medical treatment for those in need. These humanitarian efforts reflect the continued commitment of the Barzani Charity Foundation to stand alongside the people of Rojava Kurdistan during times of crisis. Through sustained cooperation, generosity, and solidarity, BCF remains dedicated to delivering aid where it is most needed and alleviating the suffering of affected communities. #RojavaKurdistan #BCF #HumanitarianAid #humanity

Kobane is facing a humanitarian catastrophe in plain sight. Despite urgent warnings from NGOs and Kurdish MPs, Turkey has blocked an aid convoy carrying water, baby formula, milk and blankets to the Kurdish city of Kobane—just across its own border. Civilians are running out of food, electricity and basic necessities. Reports from the ground confirm that children have died from cold and starvation. Blocking humanitarian aid is not a security measure. It is a violation of humanitarian principles and international responsibility. Kobane is not an ordinary city. It is a symbol of resistance—the place where ISIS was defeated in 2015. Today, it is encircled by Syrian government forces while the northern border remains sealed. Aid trucks wait metres away as civilians pay the price. As a NATO member and Western ally, Turkey must be held to account. Borders can be opened. Humanitarian corridors can function—when there is political will. This moment also demands stronger solidarity. Kobane is on Turkey’s doorstep. Kurdish political parties, civil society and the wider public must raise pressure to prevent further loss of life. Humanitarian aid is not optional. It is an obligation. #Kobane #Rojavakurdistan #HumanitarianCrisis #OpenTheBorder #Kurds #HumanRights #InternationalLaw straitstimes.com/world/turke…

Between Ceasefire and Caution: What 30 January Really Means for North-Eastern Syria The 30 January accord between Damascus and the SDF may prevent another devastating round of bloodshed in north-eastern Syria—and that matters. For Kurds, this moment is heavy with contradiction. Years of sacrifice built a hard-won space of self-administration, dignity and pluralism. Trust in a central government shaped by authoritarianism and religious extremism does not come easily, nor should it. Yet avoiding war is not surrender. This ceasefire was not born of goodwill alone, but of Kurdish resilience, popular pressure across the four parts of Kurdistan and the diaspora and sustained diplomatic engagement—particularly from the Kurdistan Region. The agreement offers an opening, not a guarantee: an opportunity to save lives, stabilise communities and test whether integration can occur without erasing Kurdish political, cultural and security rights. Its success will be measured not by signatures, but by behaviour—on the ground, over time. Cautious optimism is not weakness. It is the responsibility of a people who have paid too much to gamble blindly again. #Syria #NorthEastSyria #Kurds #Rojavakurdistan #Ceasefire #KurdishRights #FragilePeace #SDF

#WARNING | Leaked recording from Syria A leaked audio attributed to an individual affiliated with the Syrian transitional Islamist authorities contains explicit calls for mass violence against Kurds, including language advocating the killing and burning of children. While urging tactical restraint to avoid international backlash, the speaker makes clear that this is not rejection of violence, but a delay to prevent Kurdish forces from intervening. This is not an isolated slip of language. It reflects a genocidal mindset and mirrors the discourse now circulating among actors claiming authority in Syria. When such rhetoric goes unchallenged, it signals tacit approval from the top and poses an immediate threat to civilians. This must be investigated, documented and confronted — before words turn into irreversible crimes. #Syria #Kurds #GenocideWarning #HumanRights #Accountability #ProtectCivilians #rojavakurdistan

This statement by the so-called “Syrian British Consortium” @BritishSyrian is a textbook example of political laundering. As a journalist originally from the region, with direct access to trusted sources on the ground, I must state clearly: this narrative is deeply misleading and omits the most critical facts. Since the so-called “transitional authorities” took control, documented war crimes have been committed by forces affiliated with the new Syrian Arab regime, including attacks on civilians, enforced displacement, collective punishment and the targeting of Kurdish neighbourhoods. These violations are not allegations — they are documented, ongoing and independently verified. Today, Kobani is under siege from four directions. Civilians from Sheikh Maqsoud, Afrin, and surrounding areas have been forcibly displaced and are now sheltering in Qamishlo under dire humanitarian conditions. There are no safe corridors, no international monitoring and no protection mechanisms in place. Claims of “stabilisation,” “voluntary evacuation,” or “historic recognition of Kurdish rights” ring hollow when armed forces continue to besiege Kurdish cities, suppress local self-administration and erase political agency through force. A presidential decree issued under military pressure does not constitute rights; it constitutes coercion. Any attempt to portray the dismantling of Kurdish self-governance as “legal unification” while civilians are besieged and displaced is not peace-building — it is ethnic cleansing by bureaucratic language. What is urgently needed now is international intervention, humanitarian corridors, independent investigations, and accountability — not the normalisation of armed repression under the banner of state authority. Silence or distortion at this moment is complicity. #KobaniUnderSiege #StopEthnicCleansing #SyriaWarCrimes #ProtectKurdishCivilians #HumanitarianCorridorsNow #AccountabilityForSyria #InternationalIntervention #rojavakurdistan
Our response to @jeremycorbyn MP regarding his 12 January letter on Syria which contained factual and contextual inaccuracies regarding the legal and security situation on the ground. Civilian protection, political inclusion, and national unity must be the priority at this stage.
