Homer was cool with the Ethiopians. Poseidon hung out with Ethiopians. RomanPunks have Ethiopians.
Homer was cool with the Ethiopians. Poseidon hung out with Ethiopians. But if Helen of Troy was an Ethiopian, not a Greek, Homer would have said so. It would have been a pretty different story.

Little known fact. Cato the Elder was only 34 years old when he needed every one of his speeches with “Carthage must be destroyed!”

Why are there 1,001 RomanPunks on OpenSea? Our RomanPunk Basquiat was removed in 2023 at the request of the IPR. So we replaced him with Saint Helena. Then for some reason he appeared again. Now there are two RomanPunk#899s . Both saints.

🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#930 - Galba 🐩 Servius Sulpicius Galba (3 BC - 69 AD) was the sixth Roman emperor who assumed the throne with the help of Otho and the Praetorian Guard following Nero's suicide. He was the first emperor in the Year of the Four Emperors after serving in various administrative positions including consul and governor. Galba was severely arthritic, ruthless and lived a lavish lifestyle, alienating his own men by not sharing recovered money with them. He also angered his long-time supporter Otho by declaring his adopted son, Piso, heir instead. Galba served as emperor for less than seven months before Otho bribed the Praetorian Guard to murder Galba and Piso, taking the throne for himself. Galba was also an animal lover. Rather than wear the usual imperial signet ring with a portrait of Augustus, Galba wore one with an image of a dog. When he was killed his loyal dog tried to fight off his assassins. When his killers tried to take his head as a trophy, they had to kill Galba's dog in order to do so. 'The hound would not leave his side, but fought like a soldier for the dead master that had reared him from a pup'. Follow us on X for more RomanPunks of the day!
Emperor Galba, the dog lover, was assassinated on this day in 69 AD. Rather than wear the usual imperial signet ring with a portrait of Augustus, Galba chose to wear one with an image of a dog. When the assassins came for the emperor, his 'faithful hound of valiant spirit' did all it could to fight them off. Afterwards, the animal even tried to protect Galba's dead body, so that when the killers attempted to take the emperor's head as a trophy, they had to kill the dog in order to do so: 'The hound would not leave his side, but fought like a soldier for the dead master who had reared him from a pup. A friend to the very last'. 😭 - Aelian (On Animals, 7.10), Cassius Dio (51.3)

🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#898 - Charlemagne Charlemagne, 743–814 AD, King of the Franks and the first Holy Roman Emperor, was instrumental in uniting Western Europe for the first time since the Roman Empire's fall. Crowned emperor in 800 AD, his reign was marked by extensive military campaigns, including the significant conquest of Saxony, a feat not achieved by Roman rulers. Charlemagne's legacy also includes substantial legal and economic reforms alongside the expansion of Christianity throughout his empire. Despite these achievements, the unity and strength of his empire waned under his successors, illustrating the challenges of maintaining such a vast realm. 🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#925 - Gaius Marius Gaius Marius (157 - 86 BC) is a Roman general, seven-time consul and victor of the Cimbric and Jugurthine wars, and was known as the 'third founder of Rome'. Marius is known for his changes to the Roman army, most notably the shift from levied militia to full-time professional soldiers, improvements to the pilum (javelin), organizing units into cohorts, promotions within the ranks, awarding retired soldiers with land and making the eagle the primary standard of the Roman army. Thanks to Marius, professional soldiers were more likely to be loyal to their general than the Roman state. In his later years, before dying of a fever, Marius waged many internal battles with patrician leaders, his main rival being Sulla. Follow us on @X for more #RomanPunks of the day!

🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#963 - Claudius Gothicus Marcus Aurelius Claudius Gothicus, 214–270 AD, also known as Claudius II, reigned as Roman Emperor from 268 to 270, earning a reputation for his military prowess against Germanic and Gothic threats. Initially an army officer under Gallienus, Claudius rose through the ranks to lead the cavalry before seizing power following Gallienus's assassination. While his reign did not reunite the western provinces with the empire, Claudius achieved significant victories, notably repelling the Alemanni from Italy and decimating a large Gothic force at the Battle of Naissus. His successes, however, were cut short when he succumbed to the plague, leaving the throne to his capable cavalry commander, Aurelian. Claudius II's brief but impactful reign is marked by his valiant defense of the empire against external invasions. Follow us on X for more RomanPunks of the day!

🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#490 - Claudius Claudius (10 BC – 54 AD) was the fourth Roman emperor. He ruled from 41 AD to his death in 54 AD. Claudius had some kind of disability, in speech and walking, and his family kept him from public office until he was 38. Claudius' infirmity may have saved him from the purges of Tiberius' and Caligula's reigns; enemies did not see him as a serious threat. He was declared emperor at the insistence of the Praetorian Guard after Caligula's assassination. Despite his lack of experience, Claudius proved a good administrator and a great builder of public works. His reign saw an expansion of the Empire, and the conquest of Roman Britain. He took a personal interest in the law, and he presided at public trials. Claudius' relative and adopted son Nero succeeded him as emperor, and undid much of his good work. 🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#924 - Tacitus Tacitus (56 - 120 AD) was Rome’s most incisive historian, chronicling the empire’s highs and lows with a biting pen. Known for his works on the Germanic tribes, Roman emperors, and his father-in-law Agricola’s campaign in Britain, Tacitus didn’t shy away from criticizing emperors like Tiberius, Nero, and Domitian. Yet, despite his critiques, he remained loyal to the empire, balancing sharp observations with a sense of duty. Tacitus recorded one of the earliest non-biblical accounts of the persecution of Christians and the crucifixion of Jesus, shaping Rome’s historical narrative. His long public career, from quaestor to proconsul of Asia, gave him a rare insider’s view of Rome’s power dynamics, though he’s been faulted for some loose geography and military details. Still, Tacitus’ legacy endures as a master of history who saw Rome with unflinching clarity. Follow us on @X for more #RomanPunks of the day!

🏛️🐺🦅🌈 RomanPunk#003 - Julius Caesar Gaius Julius Caesar (100–44 BC) is a military general and statesman who played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. A member of the Julian gens, Caesar displayed military genius in the Gallic Wars, where his campaigns brought Gaul under Roman control. His crossing of the Rubicon River in 49 BC, defying the Senate's authority, led to civil war, out of which Caesar emerged as the unrivalled leader of Rome. Declared dictator perpetuo (dictator in perpetuity), his centralisation of power and ambitious reforms aimed at addressing Rome’s numerous issues but also ignited concerns regarding his monarchical intentions. Notably, he introduced the Julian calendar, which is the basis of the calendar used today. Fearing his growing power, a group of senators, including his friend Brutus, assassinated him in 44 BC. His death catalysed the end of the Roman Republic, paving the way for the ascension of his grandnephew, Augustus, as the first Roman Emperor, and thereby the establishment of the Roman Empire. Today 49BC Julius Caesar crosses the Rubicon, signaling the start of civil war. He was leading one legion, the Legio XIII Gemina. This act of war on the Roman Republic by Caesar led to widespread approval amongst the Roman civilians, who regarded him as a hero. The historical records differ about which decisive comment Caesar made on crossing the Rubicon: one report is Alea iacta est (usually translated as "The die is cast").
