One of those incredible teachers is Gary Andersen, Computer Science teacher at @ALBrownHS in Kannapolis, NC, who was named a finalist for the NCCAT 2026 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Career & Technical Education Teacher of the Year Award. Gary was one of 23 exceptional educators selected from across North Carolina for this distinction. The award celebrates #CTEteachers who exemplify innovation, leadership, and dedication to preparing students for future careers, and Gary has transformed what it means to teach #computerscience and #gamedevelopment in a high school CTE setting. As he puts it, “Computer science is not knowing how to do computer science. It’s knowing how to use computer science to figure something out.” Gary builds a space where students take the lead, experiment freely, and learn as much from what breaks as from what works. “I find my students learn more when they make mistakes,” he says. “I learn more when I make mistakes. 🔬 STEM for Inclusion | Innovation for Empowerment | Education for Transformation IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is set to host a one-day STEM Education Workshop on 28 May 2026 at the Penman Auditorium, under the BCCL-funded CSR initiative, aimed at promoting STEM education among underprivileged and Project Affected Person (PAP) students from BCCL operational areas in Dhanbad. Titled “Promoting STEM Education for Underprivileged and Project Affected Person (PAP) Students of BCCL Areas in Dhanbad through Innovative Techniques: A Logical, Digital, and Experimental Learning Approach,” the programme will engage 550 students from government schools in an immersive learning experience designed to foster scientific curiosity, analytical thinking, innovation, and digital literacy. The workshop is being coordinated by Prof. Rashmi Singh and Prof. Niladri Das of the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. The programme will be graced by Shri Manoj Kumar Agrawal, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, BCCL, as Chief Guest, in the presence of Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, senior BCCL officials, and Shri Abhishek Jha, District Education Officer, Dhanbad. A key highlight of the workshop will be guided exposure visits to IIT (ISM)’s advanced innovation and research facilities, including TexMiN Innovation Hub, Robotics Laboratory, Geological Museum, Atal Community Innovation Centre (ACIC), Central Library, and Student Activity Centre, offering participating students first-hand exposure to scientific research, technology, and future STEM career pathways. Under its corporate social responsibility initiative, REC Ltd has committed financial assistance of ₹1.40 crore for the implementation of the ‘Green Innovator Immersive Learning Lab’ project in 10 government schools of Karnal District, Haryana. The project will be executed by I-Hub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC). The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) in this regard was signed today at the REC Corporate Office, Gurugram, between Shri Arun Kumar Tyagi, Executive Director (CSR), REC Limited and Shri Ashutosh Dutt Sharma, CEO, IHFC (IIT Delhi). The initiative, which reaffirms REC's commitment to strengthening the educational ecosystem, aims to enhance experiential learning among school students through immersive technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D learning tools, and STEM-based education modules. The launch of the new coding and robotics lab at Joe Slovo Engineering High School brought together a dynamic panel of voices, facilitated by Radio Zibonele’s Lizeka Khweleni to reflect on what this milestone means for the school and its learners. Maude Modise: Director of Shoprite Foundation of the explained that Joe Slovo was deliberately selected for its exceptional academic track record, particularly its strong matric and Mathematics pass rates, making it an ideal home for a technology-centred STEM facility. Xoliswa Mahlangu of Sifiso Edtech and lab teacher Mr Tetani spoke candidly about early staff anxieties, teachers from non-tech backgrounds initially feared redundancy but shared how those concerns gave way to enthusiasm, with even language teachers embracing coding and robotics training. Youth Council member Caroline Tleane and learner from Joe Slove Inga Javu captured the learner perspective powerfully: the lab has shifted how young people see ICT equipment, no longer just for social media, but as tools for innovation, systematic thinking, and building real futures. Minister Siviwe Gwarube delivered a passionate address at the opening of the Robotics and Digital Learning Lab at Joe Slovo Engineering High School, describing the occasion as the opening of a door of possibility for learners in the Khayelitsha community. Acknowledging the Shoprite Foundation’s investment as an act of responsible corporate citizenship, she stressed that public-private partnerships are no longer optional but essential. She was equally emphatic that robotics, coding and artificial intelligence must be built on strong foundations; a child who cannot read for meaning or reason with numbers will struggle to access the very technology this lab offers. Foundational literacy and numeracy, she argued, are not separate from innovation but its prerequisite. She spoke to what has long held communities like Khayelitsha back: not a shortage of talent or ambition, but a shortage of access. This lab, she said, begins to change that.
