Today is World Diabetes Day.
Yesterday I told a patient that his type II diabetes is reversible through diet and lifestyle. He didn't know. NOT A SINGLE provider has mentioned it before. He was diagnosed 10 years ago, and has a team of experts at a leading prestigious hospital, providing his care. If this is happening at one of the "best hospitals," in the country then I can't begin to imagine what is happening is communities with less resources.
I envision a future where I'm not the FIRST clinician to tell a patient that type II diabetes is reversible through diet and lifestyle.
The current health care system has failed him, and others like him, who remain in the dark that their disease is reversible, often in weeks or months with simple changes.
I'm grateful for
@drjasonfung @BenBikmanPhD @DoctorTro @KenDBerryMD @OfficialADSOrg @ElieJarrougeMD @BrianLenzkes @WesleyVPAC and countless others that are out there creating resources to actually help people with type II diabetes, and not by "managing" their disease, but by getting rid of it. I often refer patients to your content, books, and services, and without your hard work, these patients would have less hope.
I'm hopeful that we are finally getting on the right track. A movement is happening, and your voices, and your stories matter.
If you've reversed your type II diabetes, please share or continue to share your story. It will keep this movement going, and no doubt save someone's life.
