Yes, they’re certainly confusing. They only settled down in their current form in the early C19th, in the age of mechanised printing. It was once fine to use ‘it’s’ as a genitive pronoun, and to use an apostrophe after a vowel or sibilant to mark a plural noun (‘tomato’s’).
