Today is International Day of Zero Waste. Globally, about 1 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year according to @UN and much of this waste starts at home and on farms like ours. However, this “waste” can also be an opportunity. One practical and climate-smart solution is #BlackSoldierFly farming as demonstrated by #HatchesLtd’s BSF project supported by @aBiDevt . They have managed to assist @KCCAUG in handling the waste problem in Greater Kampala as they collect waste from Nakawa, Mukono and Nakasero Markets and feed it to Black Soldier flies that turn it into #organicfertiliser. The legislation integrates key principles of sustainable waste management including waste segregation at source, the establishment of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), and the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) at the county level. Dr. Mbarak, County Executive Committee Member for Public Health, Sanitation and Solid Waste Management and Deputy Governor of Lamu County reaffirmed the County’s commitment to sustainable waste management and a circular economy transition. What progress has our sector made in #recycling? ✅For most of our corporate members, >96% of their #packaging is already fully recyclable ✅Around 33% of our #PETbottles sold in the🇪🇺 already use a minimum of 50% #rPET.
