Check your equity gaps! ~40% Ss take remedial math in college and only 17% of those will graduate due to quitting, not failing 😱! 💭 provoking presentation about #complexinstruction at #USCOTS21 by @alanaunfried at @CSUMB
A3: This starts with #GroupWorthy tasks (multiple strengths and ways of thinking). I also use other techniques from #ComplexInstruction, especially expecting everyone to be ready to answer questions, and letting them consult with the group if they need to process more. #OCTMchat
There are some other key resemblances between #ComplexInstruction and #UniversalDesignforLearning. One is the insistence that information be presented and worked with in many different formats.
#DifferentiatedInstruction would suggest that groups be used primarily when several students need to work on the same skill. Whereas #ComplexInstruction suggests that that tasks require many different skills and abilities to complete, so everyone has to work together.
However, in #ComplexInstruction students would tackle the tasks primarily in groups, while occasionally being held individually accountable to make sure students know they can't rely on the other members of their group to do all the work.
